The only thing unapproved about landing surfaces is the fact that the surface in question is not recognized as an airport. Off airport landings used to be fairly commonplace years ago. Still are, if you live in what the smug east and west coast yuppies call "flyover country." Plenty of farmers and ranchers fly right off their property, and you won't find those airports on the map.

The reason why they're not caught is that nobody really cares. They're not doing anything wrong.

I did forget to mention the term: "dragging the field." Not too many remember what that is. I doubt that most young CFIs today have ever heard of it.

Absolutely !! Then again, I'm a former US Naval Helicopter Aircrewman... we did it OFTEN during CSAR training exercises and other training flights.

We landed once also on a elementary school yard for a display... planned, cleared, and approved.

I now own a ultra-light that I love flying off my brother's ranch and zipping around the Foothills of the Sierra Nevadas. We land all the time in fields.

Yep, a forest service road as part of our bush training. No big deal, it was straight and wide, easier than many other strips I've landed on. Just had to watch out for logging trucks but you just look for the big clouds of dust.

Up here in Canada it's not technically illegal. In fact up north a bit there are big signs on the highways telling you to beware of aircraft taking off and landing.

C-17, Afghanistan. No runway, no road, just dirt.

To Bossman. You know the saying "There is never a landing that will be better than the one you HAVE TO make." lol

Let me preface this by saying that I've never been caught doing it. If you were to do it deliberately, you'd need to be sure of the surface, power lines, possible obstructions and automotive traffic.

I don't know anything about it. I didn't see it happen. If I did see it happen, I wasn't paying attention. If I did see it happen and was paying attention, then the repurcussions of that action did not occur to me at that time.

I landed on a road 5 kilometers from a town in the Australian outback. It was the safest place to land, and there was no traffic as far as the eye could see.

technically illegal to do so, but in the outback. there isnt a policeman behind every bush.

For leisure...I operate a SuperCub...and have put it down on roads on occasion....
Wires are your #1 hazard....and some are near invisible so usually like to recce the area by car first..if possible..
And in flying helos.....done pretty routinely, depending on the type of operation.
