I confronted my mom and stepdad about me not being able to see the blackboard in school so the next time they go to costco, prob about a week from now maybe sooner, (yes i know that sounds tacky lol) they are going to take me to the optometrist there but i am afraid of going there! i am afraid i might need glasses. my stepdad said i might have astigmatism. And optometrists in general kind of scare me.(no offence to optometrists of course :) ) Is there any way I can feel better about going to the optometrist?

Most of us aren't monsters.
(and some of us are terrified by some of the people who come in, so it evens out)

The test itself shouldn't be a problem... the whole thing breaks down into little steps with no difficult decisions.
It's just possible they'll want to put some drops in your eyes which make the pupils very large: take some sunglasses.

Tip: it's fine to say "don't know" or "can't tell" We're much happier with a person who gives us a quick firm one of those, than someone who spends ages trying to decide, or makes wild guesses. "Don't know" gives us enough information to plan the next move or question. And that's all we're after. The answer to one question won't decide your future.
Nothing's in the "Will you marry me?" class.

You don't NEED glasses. I'm being picky here, but for a reason. Your eyes will not fail or go bad if you hate them so much that you'd rather have the blurred vision. But there's a fair chance you'd find glasses USEFUL, at least to wear SOMETIMES.
That may be an easier idea to come to terms with.

Astigmatism is nothing special: *everyone* has it if you measure accurately enough, but for many people it's too small an amount to bother correcting. It's only mysterious because it has to be explained in three dimensions: little diagrams of short and long sight are easier to draw. And that's all it is, a variation on short or longsight.

Overall it's nothing to worry about.
The worst thing I ever did to my patients was tell bad jokes.
Mind you, some of them were awful. The jokes, that is.

they do not do anything that could hurt you... glasses are the latest fassion accessory and there are plenty of cute frames to pick from... if you really hate glasses you could get contacts...they will you help you see better and you will most likely get better grades in school because you'll be able to see the board better.. i know what you're going through...the first time i went to the optometrist i was extremely afraid...nothing hapened, well except i needed glasses... it's really no big deal... on the glasses note, there is no reason to be afraid of glasses... if you are scared of what your friends think with your glasses then you might want to reconsider who your friends are... you could take a friend along to help you pick out your glasses...if your friends make fun of you for wearing glasses then they shouldnt be your friends...good luck

I've gone to the eye doctor hundreds of times. They don't touch you. All they want to do is examine your eyesight and check for basic problems such as glaucoma. Sure I dreaded the news when they said I need glasses, but you know what? There are many fashionable frames out there. Lens Crafters has a great selection. :)

It will be a piece of cake. The exams take about 20 minutes and are painless. You have nothing to worry about. This site gives a good overview of what is involved with an eye exams. Great resource for vision care in general. Good luck :)

there's nothing intimidating about going to the eye doctor. they don't even touch you. it's not like a reg doc or a dentist where they get up close and personal. i'd just relax...you'll be fine. and so what if you need glasses?? wouldn't it be better to be able to see than to have to squint and further ruin your eyes? i think so.

Avoid using the Bates method. Bates knew nothing about eyes and he was discredited in the 1920s.

The bates method is known to work well, helped me a little. You should buy a book that tells you how to improve vision naturally
