Great Question....

All can say is, church as we know it today is a joke.

Its no wonder there are so many atheists, when the so called followers of Christ act as we do...

God have mercy on us all.

In an ideal society the church doors should never be locked, because everyone should have access to the church. But: 1. We have access to God at anytime, we don't need a specific building to go to Him. 2. If you don't lock the doors anymore, things will walk off, and I'm not talking Bibles, hymnals, and pews. Most churches today have very sophisticated sound systems, computers, and various equipment that can fetch a certain amount of money on the market.
It might just be where I live at, but whenever a church has a social (picnic, dinners, etc) the community has always been invited. We've had picnics in the park and anyone who was out at the park could come over and eat and socialize with everyone. As Christians we need to show how God is applicable in today's society, not as some distant uncaring being. If your church has a picnic, and you see people in the park that don't attend your church, walk over and invite them to eat with you. Sure, they may turn you down and may laugh at you, but always be generous in the community and God will move people.

Unfortunately, there are people who view churches as ripoff targets rather than sanctuaries. Ideally, the doors would be open all the time; as a practical matter, it often is impossible.

not invited? that's why our Preachers or even himself go for soulwinning, so that we can reach even the uttermost part of the world..we could teach them how to get nearer to God.
i'll give you an example..

A man is talking to a barber while inside the barbershop

Man: I don't believe there is God.
Baber; Why?

Man: Because if He exist why there are people who were suffering and always in pain..
Barber: Well, i don't believe that there is a barber who exists in the world..

Man: no no, you..you are a barber so I guess they exist..
Barber: So why there are so many man having their hairs not cut..

Man: because they didn't go the barbershop..
barber: Exactly, people are just bothering to get near on God..but God waits..just waiting on them to turn around..on Him

you don't need the window dressing to wear the clothes you bought . Even if you forget about the god concept as I, you may still promote the good life without a father figure, once you grow up yourself.

What's the point of leaving the door unlocked if there's nobody there to minister to people? Inversely, what's the point of locking the door if there is?

Well, is it strictly neccessary for someone to be able to go to a church to do what they need to do? It's really more of a community center for religious people than a neccessary conduit for religious activities.
