At a business function a raffle was being held for some prizes. An individual who was leaving early, handed me his raffle ticket and said "here take it, i'm not going to be here, so if anything it's yours". His ticket number was the one called and being that he gave me the ticket, and had left the event, i claimed the prize. Who does the prize belong to, him or I?

it belongs to you but as a gesture of goodwill you could offer to split it or if you cant do that buy him a small gift to say thanks

If he gave you the ticket and said it was yours.. then if it won something, then that's yours too.

However, with that said, I will also say.. that most people would give away a raffle ticket assuming that there's no way it will win..

So here's the bottom line..

You can keep the prize, and have no reason to feel bad, since he did clearly give you the ticket..
however if this person is a friend of yours or such.. then it could create bad feelings between you and him if he finds out the ticket was a winner.. since as I said, he (like anyone else) probably gave the ticket to you thinking it wouldn't be a winner.

So you're options are,
to ease your concious, you could offer the prize to him..
or... if you want the prize, then you could at least offer to take him out as a Thank You.. or buy him lunch or a gift card or something.. something to show thanks to him.

If you do that, then that will ease your concious, you keep the prize, and he'll feel rewarded too.

Since he handed you his raffle ticket and said"here take it, I'm not going to be here, so if anything it's yours" My answer is, it belongs to you. However, if he is a person you work with or someone you will see again, chances are he would have heard about the WIN...so just to be polite you can tell him what happened and offer him the prize,if he is a gentleman he will stick to his statement and say no it's yours fair and square......

Hey if he said "its yours". The it is yours. If the prize was cash then you should offer a split. If it is tickets you should invite him. Now if the prize is some other type of item you are within your rights to keep it if it is something you want. I may get the guy a nice bottle of wine or some kind of gift as a token of appreciation. Now if the prize is worth less than 100 bucks or so a "Thank you" would be fine.

He gave you the ticket, so the prize is technically yours, BUT BUT But

If it's very expensive (e.g., a car) I wouldn't keep it as it could lead to bad feeling and trouble.

If it's something you could share (dinner for four friends, etc), you might like to be nice and share with him, but you are under no obligation to do so.

You could, however, give him a call and invite him for a coffee to say 'thanks' for the ticket!

If you don't tell him and someone else does, it could look a little mean.

You could always do it humorously ~ perhaps a joke-y "thank you" card or an email saying 'Thanks for the luck!'.

Most people would be happy with that.

Cheers :-)

He said "Here. It's yours." He wanted you to have the ticket, and whatever prize it may have won.

You, as he said.

He didn't ask you to claim the prize for him and drop it off later, he said "if anything it's yours." We can only assume he meant what he said. It's a gift.

Legally, the prize is yours. Morally ... I think you should either offer to split it with him (if high value) or someway repay him if it was a smaller valued item. i.e., let's say a DVD ... let him borrow it anytime he wants and maybe bake him some cookies or take him to lunch to thank him.

technically, since he gave you the ticket, it's yours. however, the right thing would be to give him the prize. i don't see this as a dilema. what's right is right.
