It may seem reasonable that people were aware of something big was going to happen, but reasonableness is not a good human quality.
Look at the current local floods on earth now. How many people die because they can "wait out the flood"? How many rescues must we watch on TV because the "flood wouldn't get here."?
For some reason, when it starts to flood, human brain power goes out the window.
When the waters began to rise, most of the people believed they could wait out the flood. They didn't think it was going to last as long as it did.
BTW: It's called an ark.
arch: Is a curved masonry construction, whether it be in a doorway or St Louis.

let me give you some realistic modern time picture. well first off Noah took 120 earth years to build the ship. So most people have already determined Noah to be a psycho. I mean 120 years building a ship and expecting the earth to be flooded after 120 years.
point two assumeyou are on one of the modern ships. Once you are on board the rain starts pouring all over and how on earth will I be able to attack your ship.
thirdly Bible tells us God Himself closed the door of the ship/arch...no one can open whatever door God closes. Literally or figuratively!!

All the people other than Noah and his family, were evil. They only had evil on their minds day and night. They paid no attention to what was going on with Noah, except to call him crazy. They were too busy doing evil things and plotting to do more evil. That's why they were drowned. Noah warned them, they did not listen. A lot like the atheists and agnostic's today. Just because God doesn't strike them down with a lightening bolt, they think God really won't punish them. Bummer for them.

A very important question!
Genesis 7:16 reads as follows: "So those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him; and the LORD shut him in."
Christians see this as a clear sign to anyone who thinks that they will find there own way into heaven. Once God closes off the age of His Grace (i.e., once He fulfills His offer to save any who, like Noah, would believe Him strictly on the basis of faith,) then that door is shut, and no one else will enter, no matter what.
Christians also see this as symbolic of another important doctrine. People couldn't get in, but neither could Noah get out. Once the Lord has sealed you for salvation, you are sealed in by His power. This is a subject of much debate among Christians ("can you lose your salvation?" or is it "once saved, always saved?")
I am in the latter camp. I believe once a person is truly saved, they cannot lose their salvation, nor will God cast them away. (There's an old saying: "Noah and his family might have stepped in and slipped around on a lot of stinky, nasty old animal dung while he was IN the Ark, but he could never slide OUT of the Ark, because God had sealed him in." That is, once we are saved, we will definitely sin again in the flesh, but our spirit cannot become sinful again because it has been born again into the same sinless spirit as Jesus Christ: the Holy Spirit.)
On the other hand, I do believe there are many who incorrectly believe they are saved because they have performed some ritual, joined some group or church, or made some "public statement" about Jesus, but without any sincerity. Their hearts are not truly turned towards God and I believe, deep down inside, they know it. Pride prevents them from fessing up to the falseness of their "conversion."

the bible does not tell us everything but it does say that God drew up the door. no man is a mach for God. and no non -believers wont start hanging around boats. God promised that he will never destroy the people by a flood again and the sign of this is the rainbow.

As it sat in "Dry Dock" it was just massive. There was one large loading door and only windows at the very top. When it was time The Lord Himself sealed the door.By the time the populace would have panicked,They were a float and there was no way of climbing the smooth sides.

The Bible teaches that God Himself shut the door and no man could then open it. Then the rain came.
