I have family that are in politics and live in D.C. and have visited several times over the past 12 years. The first time I visited I was stuck by how clean the grounds were and how friendly most people were, like every big city, you must be careful, but I feel very safe there, even traveling alone with a child. The Mall and the Smithsonian's are wonderful and of course all of the sites are free, check out the National Cathedral and the view from the top, Congress, especially the memorial, the Jefferson Memorial is my fav, next to the Lincoln Mem. of course and don't forget the Zoo. Free as well.
Please have a lovely time.
Oh, the postal museum close to Union station is surprisingly good!

Have a great time.

Ghetto White House

The White House is in a very nice part of Washington. The area is chock full of government offices, commercial offices, banks, and restaurants.

Less than 2 miles away is the ghetto called Anacostia. It is in Southeast DC and is BAD!

It's crap on TV, that's one of the safest neighborhoods in DC.

As a general rule, if you don't know where you are going in DC it's best to avoid the Green Line, although that's not even all that bad.

The area behind the capitol building can get a bit rough, however.

Well, one could say the current occupant is bringing down property values--har har. Except for him, nobody really lives within blocks of the White House.

Nah, I ride the bus past Lafayette Square (which is north of the White House) pretty regularly. The south side (Ellipse) is fairly safe--it's federal buildings, office buildings, maybe a few hotels.

DC has a lot of bad areas, but the area the White House is in and the Capitol Mall generally is fine.
