Oh my - ANOTHER NAME FOR MARVIN & CO! We must all standby for some REALLY interesting questions, most of which have been asked several times before under the names of marvin, frank, cris, trey , drey, and are once again being repeated by nice new accounts under such names as Frank and Bryce - and they're only for starters !~

Lots of people walk aournd with a chip on their shoulder. It is not specicfic to racial backgrounds.

A person who has "a chip on his shoulder" is angry because of some thing that happened in the past. Example: "He lost his game this morning, and now he has a chip on his shoulder." It is easy for a person to get in a fight when he has a chip on his shoulder, because he is already angry about something else. Example: "Watch out for that guy, he's got a chip on his shoulder."

To start a fight, men used to put chips of wood on their shoulder and challenge others to "try to knock it off". Example: "What's bothering that guy?" Reply: "Nothing. He's just got a chip on the shoulder." Example: "Tom had a tough time growing up, so he's got a bit of a chip on his shoulder."

You can use the definite article ("the") which sounds more general ("a chip on the shoulder"), but more often people use the personal pronoun ("his", "her", "their") to say that that specific person has "a chip on his (her, their) shoulder."

A fight outside the chippy?
It means you are carrying resentment and maybe pre-conceived prejudice as a result of something which happened in the past.
For example, as a woman, I don't trust any auto mechanic as far as I could throw him, because I was once told that the noise I heard after my jeep had been for service was coming from the hood frame. I told him I was driving soft-tops when he was still in nappies. On examination, he discovered that he had forgotten to put the locking nut on one of the wheels - and he sent me a bill for extra work!
I have a chip on my shoulder!

It has nothing to do with race. Picture, if you can, a person putting a wood chip on top of their shoulder and walking around town daring anyone and everyone to knock the chip off. (That's where the saying came from.) It means that person is angry at the world, often for no apparent reason, and looking for a fight.

Aziz should be able to answer this one.He has got not a chip but a sack of potatoes on his.
(Chip on your shoulder roughly means to blame someone else for something bad that happens to you).

Come on Aziz where are you?Are you still in the kebab shop making bombs to blow us all up?

When one has a "chip on his shoulder" , it's an attitude they carry. It's about them thinking they are better than others.

it can mean either they're generally in a bad mood or they can just be in a bad mood with 1 person specifically. it's used in the uk frequently so i'm guessing you're not from here (there).

It means they've got a grudge. Perfectly true in many cases.
