It depends entirely on what you are trying to achieve.

If you are trying to achieve history of a specific vehicle, then it would not be a reliable source because of the potential the tag could have been transferred from one vehicle to another.

However, if you are trying to determine current ownership of a plate to the vehicle it is tagged to, then police, DMV, or a private investigator privy to access to the DMV records may obtain if it is due to damage to your vehicle or possible related crime in which you should then make a formal police report.

Otherwise, if it is for personal purposes, then you may subscribe to various websites that may be able to acces the plate of question for a subscription fee or a one time search.

The above is a search results with a few websites that may be able to provide the information you seek for a fee. Just remember, not all sites may necessarily relay accurate information and you may not get what you paid for. Therefore, it is important to read the small print, the agreements, and what possbile recourse or refunds you may be able to apply for if you feel it was not a successful search. Good luck!

If it is a legal matter take it to an attorney, they can track the person or you can probably go on line and pay a fee for these services. Attorneys will do it for a minimal fee as well.

Go to the DMV or police station. If you are filing a police report they should let you know. If you are just curious they may not tell you for privacy reasons.

WHAT YOU ARE ASKING IS PROTECTED BY THE "PRIVACY ACT" AND ITS THERE FOR YOUR PROTECTION AS WELL.

DOING THIS WILL ALWAYS LEAVE WHAT IS CALLED A "PAPER TRAIL" AND YES IT WILL COME BACK TO BITE YOU.

IF YOU NEED INFORMATION LIKE WHAT YOU ARE ASKING THAT HAS TO DO WITH AN ACCIDENT THEN YOU MUST GO TO THE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND FOLLOW THE RULES.

THE (DMV) OFFICE IN YOUR STATE WILL NOT GIVE OUT THIS INFORMATION.
