Christians & Jews why does the bible say Do not suffer a witch to live when the people in it use magic all the time?

Moses parted the Reed / Red sea, turned his staff into snakes, made water appear out of a rock, etc.

Samuel, Gad, and Isaiah saw into the future

King Solomon (to Jews and Muslims) used a ring to control demons into building his temples

David had played a harp and drove out demons

Jesus turned water into wine, walked on water, rose from the dead

That's not magic, it's miracles. And the "do not suffer a witch to live" part wouldn't even cover that. "Magic" as defined as the Torah is divination (trying to see the future) through things like number codes, cards, etc. That's pretty much it.

firstly, the king solomon ring thing is at most, an obscure midrash, for jews. its definitely part something that is commonly believed.

anyway, I think generally people see there to be some unspecified distinction between prophetic magic and witchy magic.

others inteperet that line as "caster of hexes" or "poisoner" not witch.

some people inteperet this as actually being simply a ruling against negative magic.
remember the verses are in ancient hebrew, and its very possible that some of the meaning was lost, and that the translators simply chose to err on the side of caution and be over-encompassing with the inteperetation.

Actually the original said 'Thou shalt not suffer a sorcerer to live', but I totally see the point you're making.

Don't confuse magic with miracles. Magic is power and ability that does not come from God. Miracles, such as those performed by Moses and Jesus and the others, were done in the name of God.
