And I suppose you believe the earth is flat and that global warming is man made too. Since science has taught both of these stupid things as facts.

We do not, necessarily, think that quoting the bible will make you change your mind but, if you decide to tell a Christian that you do not believe in God, you must expect them to try to give you evidence to help you to believe. We are told to let all men know the truth about Jesus being a sacrifice for us. Once we have told you it is then up to you what you do with that information. Accept it and become one of God's children or reject it and live for eternity without Him. No-one will force you but we are duty bound to give you the opportunity to accept HIM. What I cannot understand is why so many, who claim to be atheists, make a big issue of the fact and then expect Christians to remain silent on the subject. If you do not desire a conversation about God/Jesus, or expect to have some bible verses quoted, then why bring up the subject in the first place? It has to be for one of two reasons - a. To be aggressive and wish to start an argument or b. You really are curious and wish to know more (but will not admit it).

Anytime a verse from Holy Writ is quoted, it is quoted as a historical reference point to whatever religion is being discussed. The charge that "verses are not scientifically sound" is rubbish: when the discussion is religion and it's application to life, quoting the book in question is ENTIRELY revelant.
Want to discuss marital fidelity and religion? Muslims, Christians, and Jews have lots and lots and lots of material gathered on the subject, compiled and protected over thousands of years. This isn't some idea a few bitter old women made up in 1975 over coffee: there is serious history associated with the topic.
Your slam about the "cute puppy dogs" and "four-year-old's christmas list" is crap. You don't want to accept the historical revelance of 4,000 years of recorded human experience? Your prejudice is your own problem. Try looking up the science of historiography, and it's application to the Bible. Then learn how to cite sources when writing papers on ANY subject, or when engaged in a debate. Both topics will do you good.

You have a right to your opinion. And I think you should expect some Bible versus for answers since you are in the R&S section. When some people try to answer question about atheism, why do they either quote Darwin, or science books. Your opinion is that the Bible is gibberish, and you have a right to your opinion, but so do I, and think that Darwin spouts off gibberish.

well, thats what you believe, so why ask a question when you obviouslly are closed minded about the answers? The verses show the person where it can be found in the scriptures, and so they can refer to it, get their own answer. People can imterperet the bible differently, so giving verses can let the person decide for themseleves. It may not be scientific fact, but anything scientific isn't FACT, its theory. Also, they do back up points and opinions. They show how it related to Christianity.

The Bible is the Word of God. That's the Christian belief. God gave us His word (the Bible) as a guideline for how to live and what laws we need to follow. Of course we are going to use Bible verses to support our views of God if we believe that the Bible comes directly from God.
The Bible verses are quotes so quickly because many of them are memorized or can be found online if you know the context, part of the verse, or the reference.

I guess Bible-believers feel they have some sort of nuclear powered answer when they quote from the Bible --- quite frankly, I'm not at all impressed since they don't seem to be able to answer the most basic questions like, "Where is Adams grave?" and "How did the Chinese culture manage to develop a documented history older than Biblical descriptions of the created earth and universe ?"

I apologize for the "gibberish", but when people want a Christian answer, you must give them a truthful answer with the verses to back it up. That is what they are looking for.
The Bible has an impact whenever it is proclaimed (Isaiah 55:11).

That's a great question. Whenever debating a believer, they inevitably start quoting bible verses. This really boggles my mind. I mean, I respect the fact that they have faith, and believe the bible is the word of god. I'm cool with that.
BUT, even if they prefer faith to science, surely they can understand that if *I* don't believe in god, then obviously *I* don't believe the bible is the word of god. For crying' out loud, they can follow logic that far, can't they?
laura, kait, jennifer: No! You miss the point entirely! If you are answering a question by an unbeliever, don't you realize that quoting scripture is useless? Please understand, I am NOT dissing your faith. I understand that to YOU, scripture is...well, scripture. But don't you understand, simply as an intelligent, rational being, that scripture to me is only words on a page?

I completely agree....it is pointless to use the Bible here...it is so funny to read as Christians quote it fend off the reasoning of the atheists. The Bible even said that it is made null when against the traditions of men. I am a Christian and I avoid quoting to atheist for exactly the reason you said.

Fundies do it when they can't answer the question because:
a) the right answer will challenge their beliefs
b) they think the Bible proves everything
c) they think if they copy n paste scripture then it'll make them look smart.
