Hello guys/gals, i currently have a Nikon D40
and my lense is 70-300mm Nikkor lense without an autofocus...
while the zoom is great, you have no idea how many pictures have to be deleted because they are simply out of focus!!!
My question to u is, do you know if these two lenses are any good? will they work and autofocus with my D40???, and whats the main difference between them:

Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon SLR Cameras
Price:$99.95

and

Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon SLR Cameras
Price: $170

Whats the APO??? lol and why is it priced higher because of it???
- Do i need it?

Thank you.

Neither of these lenses will autofocus on your D40.

If you want Sigma glass that will, you'll have to move up to their deluxe HSM line.

Or, if you want Nikon AF, you'll need ones marked AF-S.

This is why I tell people to stay away from the D40 and D40x -- they're cheap cameras that require expensive lenses.

APO means apochromatic -- it's supposed to correct for colour inaccuracies in a lens.

A much better indication of lens quality is maximum aperture -- fast lenses are generally pro lenses.

Hope this helps.

IMO your money is best spent buying Genuine Nikon lenses for your Nikon.

Using manual focus does take some practice. I've been practicing for over 36 years and still occasionally miss it. When I first started, I practiced by taping a piece of newspaper on an evenly lit wall and when I could read it I knew it was in focus.

Also, watch your shutter speed. If you keep the shutter speed at the reciprocal of the lens length you'll get better results. So when using a 300mm lens, keep the shutter speed at a minimum of 1/250; 1/500 would be better.

in case you opt for vehicle concentration, the lens ought to have an internal focusing motor. Nikon makes a fifty 5-3 hundred lens that does an outstanding interest. you're in a position to desire to discover what Nikon has till finally now going to a 0.33 social accumulating lens. now not that there is a few thing incorrect with the Tamron or Sigma, in basic terms which you realize a Nikon lens is going to bigger wholesome and common overall performance like that's intended to. in basic terms understand that there are incredibly some Nikon lenses that have not have been given the internal focusing motor. in case you do now not suggestions focusing manually, then there are some older, solid used Nikon lenses obtainable.
