The military draft is NOT the same as Selective Service which is a registration of American males. The draft uses that registration list to obtain the men it needs as authorized by Congress.

Will it ever come again? Only in times of extreme national emergency. For example, if an electro-magnetic pulse of sufficient strength was to be generated over the northeastern USA, it would take out all vehicles, military and civilian, all power grids, all communication grids in that area. The resulting civil unrest could result in an emergency condition where use of our military and reserves may not be enough. A draft of suitable personnel could be used to fill in the gaps and restore order. This is a non-traditional use of the draft, but in this day and age, not an impossible scenario.

No. We no longer have a need for masses of troops moving to contact against other masses of troops. The all-volunteer force seems to meet their recruiting and retention goals. My only concern is that only 15% of American males between the ages of 18 and 26 can meet the physical standards for entry into the armed forces. Reinstating the draft isn't going to change that reality.

There is sort of a "draft" right now. It is called the selective service and it pertains to men. I don't think there will ever be a draft like they did in Vietnam and WWII.

If we attack Iran you can bet your life on it. There is no way we have troop strength for another on going war! You watch how fast the anti war movement picks up too if they institute the draft again. Even rich kids and girls will have to go. I think it will be a good idea, maybe wars might end!

No, the Department of the Army has said on many occasions that they do not want a draft. It is only congress that are suggesting it ...people that probably have never served!

Nope, because if we ever needed to increase the size of the military that much and that fast.

It would be because of something major had happened,

And more than likely, people would be enlisting on thier own, just like in WW ll.

I don't think it will in our lifetime. And I hope it doesn't. That would make my benefits go straight down.

Everything has become political these days, and a draft is not politically sound. Hell, everyone's pissed off right now that we have volunteers serving their country.
