I can't really think of anything else that you can do to achieve a clearer picture for your PS2 other than buying component cables.

First you need to make sure that your T.V. has the connectors for a component connection. The Sony component cables only cost about $20 bucks brand new. If you want to achieve a better picture, need to go buy the component cables.

I use the Sony PS3 gold plated component cables with my PS3 and they are well worth the $20 bucks (The PS3 component cables can be used with the PS2 as well).

Since your TV is not HD, there will be no difference between the PS3s component and a the output of an HDMI to component converter box. That HDMI cable is just a breakout cable for some device that outputs actual component on its HDMI connector, not a device that converts digital HDMI video and audio to analog component. That would require a box of some sort. Being that the PS3 has its own component out, there is no need to use the HDMI connector for such a purpose.
