Unless you were asked to wear the red tie, I would skip it.
The best thing to do is ask your son what he would like you to wear. If it is formal he may ask you to rent a tux and then our problem is solved. If it is semi formal or he doesn't mind you wearing a suit, then a nice dark suit with a matching dhirt and tie would be fine. Just nothing to bold, you don't want to take any attention away from the bride and groom.
For the rehearsal dinner it all depends on what type of occasion. Most rehearsal dinners I have been to are either casual or dressy casual. So khaki's and a nice shirt would be find. Maybe a sport jacket but you can probably skip the tie.
Like I said just check with your son I am sure he will have the answer for you (or his future wife will!)

What kind of wedding are they having? Formal? Daytime?
You could ask him...or wear a dark suit- you can't go wrong...classy and elegant. The red tie might add a nice flair during holiday time!

Ask your son and ask the bride or her mother and see what they would like you to wear! :)
It just depends on what type of wedding it is, usually the bride has stuff picked out for both mothers. Good luck!
