I think it depends on what the church does with the money. If it goes to make the minister rich, then I would say not. But if the church uses that money to do good and to spread the gospel to those who want to hear it and giving them a place to meet, then I think it is pretty similar.
Then again, maybe no matter what it is the same, some times when you donate to a charity most of your money ends up going to the people that collect it. That is similar to the minister pocketing all of the money.

No. A sacrificial gift to the Lord is an act of Worship. God specifically instructs it to be done to him through the Temple, then the church in our era.
However, in Proverbs we are told that lending or giving to the poor is like lending to God. He will repay. Charity should not be overlooked either.

When I do charity work, (now mind you I'm still in high school), I try not to give to charities and churches, because I feel they squander the money often times.
I have a science teacher whom knows people whom have families with young kids and such, that have family problems such as drug abuse, and I give her money, because I know exactly what's going to my money.
You could start something like that, or what I do often times is just give a buck to someone who is down on their luck (ex. the kid in the lunch line whose short a dollar and change.)

Up until a few months ago that was happening. it was called Home Access. "The programme has been incredibly successful, with more than 250,000 families now benefiting from increased access to technology at home to improve learning. More than 9,000 children with profound disabilities, special educational needs or who face challenges accessing computers and the internet are also reaping the benefits of bespoke technology to meet their individual needs, which has enabled them to be brought not only online, but in line with their peers." Of course that was taxpayer funded... That name has already got a high profile. Perhaps they would donate the domain name to you to carry on their work...

Yes, as far as income tax is concerned.
As to the person who says churches only use the money for themselves, I wonder how many different churches' account books you have gone through to check that out?

Without taking the time to look it up, God expect us to give 10% of "our" money to Him. Refer to John 1:3. Meaning it was His to begin with. He has allow us to own what we have. The Bible goes on to say that if we don't, it like stealing from Him. Just remember that you/I/we can never out give God. What a blessing that is!
Tithing is to be done at your local church.
I know that my church use part of the money to pay the usual bills: Lights, water, phone, etc. Part of the money goes to pay our pastor. Which God demands us to do. Then there is the account for "others" offering which helps pay for a new van, etc.
And last but not least, the rest of the money goes drectly to help support missionaries that my church chooses to support.
