I remember an officer once telling us what some nicknames were for the armed forces, but I can only remember that one of the ones for the air force was the "fly-boys" anyone know any other names?

We called the AirForce guys 'zoomies' and when they weren't around, 'the post office in uniform'. Marines were 'jarheads' or 'grunts', their shaved haircuts were "hi 'n tight's' , Army guys were 'grunts' or 'groundpounders'.

Being in the Navy we were usually called 'squids' , although guys on ships are called 'fleeties' by the shore crowd and persons stationed ashore were called 'sand crabs'. Naval Air Squadron guys were called 'airedales'.

Some special ones: when something is REALLY fouled up, detsroyed, unorganized or broken, the Navy and Marines called it 'Fubar' (f**ked up beyond all recognition), whereas the Army and AirForce used 'Snafu' (situation normal, all f**ked up). A piece of equipment that was broken (in the Navy) was said to be 't*ts up' (as in: flat on it's back, dead).
Hamburgers were called 'sliders' (they're greasy, they slide in, and later they slide out). ''F**kin' A Dittybag" meant 'yes, of course, that's right", and "haze gray and underway" was a phrase used to indicate that you were indeed a true sailor, and that you were on a ship, and at sea.

So an actual navy conversation could go like this:

"what're you up to, sand crab?"
"bite the big one fleetie, why ain't you floatin' somewhere?"
"ah, we were scheduled to be haze gray and under way by now, but our radar is t*ts up, man, it's fubarred!"
"so, lets go get some sliders and mess with the jarheads"
"f**kin A dittybag!"

- and everyone would know what was said, and no one would be surprised to hear it. Cool!, huh?

There's literally 100's more, hope that gets you started.
