I know how you feel. I get depressed sometimes for diffrent reasons. But one big reason is because I have Bipolar Disorder. This can cause Depression and Mainia. Mania is the part of the Depression where you feel happy and upbeat. Also, you have racing thoughts, like you can do anything. Sometimes you can have ideas rushing to you at once. And on the flip side, The sad part of Depression, is where you have feelings of worthlessness, you feel down and dont want to be bothered. Sometimes you cry or even have suicidal thoughts. But then within the next 20 minutes to half hour, you might feel happy again and upbeat. This is what its like for people with Bipolar Disorder everyday. All because of a chemical imbalance in the brain. However, their is help. Doing things that make you happy mostly works. Be around people as much as you can or go out and do something fun. Try to keep from staying to yourself for long periods of time. Staying to yourself, will only increase boredom and the depression. Go out and meet some new people. Its going to be strange at first because you havent done it. But once you do you will feel better. Some people say medication. That works for some people. If you feel like you would like to give it a try, than go ahead. I hope it works for you. Seeing a therapist didnt work for me. I didnt like talking to a stranger about my problems. However, it might work for you. Some therapist are nice and caring. A Psychatrist is who you would talk to, to get your medicine. Whatever you decide to do, I hope it works good for you.

You are depressed because that is the acceptable emotion in your family.
About 12 years ago, I noticed that I suffered from depression, I was almost put away for a while (or longer) because of it. I looked at my family while I was working on a self help book called "Making Peace With Your Past" for adult children of dysfunctional families. What I saw was not pretty. The whole family used a combination of anger and or depression to deal with life. What is depression but anger turned inward? What is anger but depression turned outward?
I used a 12 step program to get better (AA was the one I went too). These steps work.
In addition I made a promise to myself to be as happy as I could be under the circumstances. One reason for this was that I was told that with in 60 days of an extremely elating or depressing event we will return to our former state of happiness. Well I could not afford to go back there any more then a drunk can afford to drink again.
Today I am doing better and with the Lords help, I will do better tomorrow.
I know I did not want to hear it but it is true- Rejoice and again I say rejoice (Ph 4:4)
But it works, if you work it.

I think the combination of everything you said here can lead to some feelings of depression or sadness. Sounds like you might be in a bit of a stressful situation at home. Try to get out and about as much as you can. It's always easier to lay in bed or be lazy then make the effort to be out but usually you feel a bit better if you do. Your age makes it hard sometimes to make friends if you don't have a network already because you aren't in school anymore. Sometimes if you find special interest groups then you can make friends within that. Like knitting, scrap booking, photography, art, etc. Good luck and I know the feeling, it isn't a fun one just try to get around positive people or find something you love to do and dive into it, take care!

Hi Jenn,
You don't have to want to be down to be down, but you do have to want to be up to be up. So get off the couch, turn off the TV, and start living your life.
Clean up your house if it needs it.
Get a new hair do, and a new outfit.
Get a job or start a career.
Get a hobby. Join a club.
Go to church and get involved! God wants you to be his own. He is not a fairy tale.
Help the needy. That's a great way to find out how good you have it.
Start doing aerobics. That's a sure way to get pumped!!
Anyway quit laying around moaning. That's a one way ticket down no where street.
Got the picture?
And whatever you do sugar plum, hang in there.
We're all in this together!

Well, you've been through so much in your short life. I'd say join a group of people (Club like) with people who have the same type of problem. All of you go out together (Dinner/Movies) and work on that depression. Who knows........You may find a special person for your life. Say good bye depression. (That is if the depression is not like what your mother has) Give it a try. Good luck!!

I can see why you have some concerns but you'd be surprised that the reason many people get depressed has a lot to do with what they eat. One of the main things you want to stay away from is sugar, i.e. white bread, pasta, rice and sugar of course in many cereals. Being depressed happens to everyone at one time or another, If it runs for a long period say a month or more I would contact a physician.

Uh..Jenn?
Given what you just described, and I have no idea what NF Type(1) is, I'd be damned surprise if you were NOT sad!
In fact, maintaining your mood at 'sad' and not descending into depression is probably a triumph.

It sounds like depression may run in the family. I would tell you to see a doctor to know for sure, but all they want to do is give you drugs, not really help. Find something that you enjoy doing and makes you happy and focus on that for a while. It might help to cheer you up if you do something you enjoy.
