Don`t worry about your accent. Most likely no one will dislike you because of that (if it`s not something extraordinary).

I`ve been living in London for all my life but I often travel to LA, and I`ve got to say - more and more I realize that the language you hear in LA sounds very... clear, smooth and logical, comparing to the way we are used to talk in UK. All these years I have noticed that foreign partners have more trouble to understand me than my american colleagues.

If you really have a reason to move to the UK, just maybe try to avoid using US-specific terms, but the accent - do not try to fake.

Few things sound worse than a fake English accent; listen to Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins, there are a lot of accents in England but that is not one of them! If what you really want to know is if the English dislike Americans enough to make you feel safer keeping your nationality to yourself....on the whole they don't really dislike anyone that much and the few really racist groups are more concerned about non-whites than the non-English.
I am a Canadian living in England and the only trouble I ever had with my accent was that so many people insisted I was an American because of it..no offence but would you like to have people declaring that you must come from California because you had, for instance, a Floridian accent?

The real answer may surprise you, but the British actually not all that conscientious about accent differences in English. The same thing can almost be said for Americans too.

I am of course, talking about the overwhelming majority of British and Americans, not every Briton and American. There are always exceptions to anything.

In this respect, Britons and Americans are somewhat like the Ancient Romans. The Romans didn't have much of a linguistic mindset either. Not only do they not tell us anything about the languages of the peoples they conquered, they don't even tell us much about how they spoke Latin. This is why there are many gaps in the history of how the Modern Romance languages (French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian) evolved from Latin, and why scholars have to rely on indirect evidence.

British people hear the American accent in films and on TV all the time. They won't judge you for it. Those (very few) who do aren't worth knowing....Enjoy!

Your accent is fine, so long as you remember it IS an accent.

Please don't tell me I'm the one with an accent, though!

Just remember I'm the one who speaks the Queen's English!
