The puppy does it so quickly...she walks up to it, sniffs it and then eats it. If you catch her before the act, as when she sniffs it we tell her no and kaka and bad but she still eats it. Then we punish her but not like a really bad spanking.

It could be the following reasons:

If the dog is being under fed, the dog may still be hungry which may lead to stool eating.

If the dog is being fed a poor-quality food, the dog could be suffering from malnutrition and/or vitamin and mineral deficiencies which could cause him to eat things in addition to his regular diet, such as his own stool.

If the dog is being fed too many treats during the day, he may be too full to complete his balanced daily meal(s), which could lead to malnutrition and/or vitamin and mineral deficiencies and an increased appetite at varying times of the day.

If the dog has a medical problem that causes a decrease in the absorption of nutrients or causes gastrointestinal upset, the dog may resort to stool eating.

If the dogs stool contains large amounts of undigested food materials, there is an increased likelihood that the stool will be eaten. This is seen in dogs that have any type of medical condition that leads to poor digestion of their food.

If the dog has a medical problem or is taking medication for a problem which causes an increase in appetite, the dog may resort in stool eating. Some examples might be; diabetes, Cushing’s disease, thyroid disease, or any treatment involving steroids.

The dog may eat his stool if the dog is being kept in too small an area. Frequently, people do not clean out their dog runs often enough, and the feces gather up in this area; this can become very stressful for the dog.

Even in a large area, if the stools are not being picked up quickly enough, that can lead to the problem of stool eating.

If the dog is bored and does not have anything else to stimulate him, he might investigate his feces out of boredom, begin playing with it and then possibly start eating it.

It is a form of Pica. Try a product that is sprinkled over the defecating dog's food called For-Bid.

Coprohagia is the technical term for eating feces. It is not known why some dogs do this...here are some ideas why:

Nutritional deficiencies may be present in some dogs.
Boredom may be a cause in some pets
Dogs will eat the stools of other species, especially cats and rabbits, too.
Dogs obviously do not find the taste of feces objectionable or the behavior would be self correcting.
For-Bid stops pets from eating their stool. One-half to one packet mixed with your dogs daily ration imparts a forbidding taste to excrement.

One of my rescue dog eats feces, however, only the droppings of my housedog. Go figure! She has yard companions and she isn't the slightest bit interested in their excrement. I've researched extensively and found this isn't uncommon. By the way, my dogs eat a very high quality dog food and feel and look fantastic. This makes me think, there isn't something missing in the diet. I think she just likes a little snack. I completely agree that keeping the yard policed will help tremendously. I also watch after my little dog pottys and if the "snacker" heads for the pile, I sternly reprimand her and she leaves it and trots back to me. Good luck, in the meantime, I'd avoid kisses from the offender.

Don't punish and don't buy the pills for your other dog that is supposed to deter the other dog from eating the poop.
The best thing I can say is police the yard for poop as often as possible and watch so the suspect can't get any.
You can do the (state name of dog & no) they still try to eat but also help with policing the area for clean-up.

If the pup can smell any nutrition in the poop, she will eat it. You can sprinkle some Adolph's Meat tenderizer on both dog's food, to try to take the smell out of the poop. I heard you could sprinkle it on the poop, but why not just pick it up instead?? Use a consistand, loud, NO when you see her going for it.

That is just a dog habit. My German Shepard - Malamute mix eats my cats poo out of the litterbox. The best thing to do is just try and catch them in the act and tell them no very firmly.

I did see something on tv that you can add a certain herb to your dogs food when you feed them that when they poop, there poo doesn't taste good and they will stop eating it.
