At about 5, I figured it out and confronted my father. I could tell by the way he hemmed and hawwed that I was right, so I played along after that for my little brothers and sisters.

Wasn't the tradition of Santa Claus started because of a Saint called Saint Nick..who would leave small bags of gold in the houses of the poor?

Do you mean Saint Nicholas?
He was very real, and a genuine Saint who gave up his worldly wealth to help the poor with good gifts. He was born in Turkey, and there is still a statue of him in the town where he lived.
I told my kids all about how this man came to represent selfless giving. Then I told him that we keep his memory alive by giving secret gifts to others. Then I asked them who wants to be Santa Claus!!!! Guess what? Everybody is Santa Claus, and so he lives on.
Of course I did have to say that he lives in heaven now...but then they already knew that nobody lives forever!

Of course, today we commercialize Christmas far too much, and the giving of secret charity has become a big greedy joke, but still it is fun for kids.

Errm...well....I never, errr, really believed to begin with....about him, the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy...any of it...

So, even though people telling me they weren't real was nice confirmation, it wasn't a surprise...
