Islam does it to itself.
You have people going "Islam is a religion of peace", which Islamic believer scream about killing all the infidels.
When Sunni MUSLIMS and Shi'ite MUSLIMS take turns blowing up each other, you have a severe credibility issue. How can you be a religion of peace when members of your own faith kill other members of your own faith?

If you would live here and see all of the media that Westerners see and hear from the time they are children, then you would understand. It doesn't help that Muslims give those who want to make Islam look bad all manner of fuel for their fires. Westerners rarely hear of anything good coming out of the Muslim world. They forget that news is selective and usually focuses on the negative. Since the people don't usually have any other point of reference, they assume that Muslim countries are full of sword and bomb toting wackos ready to declare jihad on any foreigner in their path. That is the impression they get from the news here.
And yes, your screen name is not helping.

Because of the people who do things that do not deserve respect.
I certainly respect people's right to their beliefs. I respect people who live in harmony with people who disagree with them. I respect people who reach out in honest efforts to understand other people.
Sadly, I do not see those traits in very many Islamic people, although there certainly are exceptions! I am honored to call some Muslims my friends and colleagues.
But when people go on murderous demonstrations over teddy bears, blow up innocent civilians, kill schoolchildren in Beslan, hack off people's heads in Indonesia, kill nuns because some cartoonist drew a picture of Mohammed somewhere in Europe, Kill their own people in Iraq and Sudan, terrorize the world, rant on and on with an attitude of superiority......I'm sorry.....that is why you all are getting the bad rap.
Do you want the mocking to stop? Start denouncing the lunatics instead of standing up for them.

Fist Islam is more easily seen as a completely made up religion. Second there is no archaeological proof whatsoever for it. Third, it inspires even greater levels of intolerance and denial of human rights in Muslin nations. To borrow a phrase from the Christians, "It has bad fruit."

Because the West is and always have been afraid of Islam and its the best way to protect themselves. It is only the ignorant that do this because they do not understand the religion and don't even try to find accurate information on it either. Even though we are a nation built on immigration and diversity, sadly, we are still learning how to respect other people's different cultures.
