It only seems that way. In my experience cats are equal opportunity destructors.

Most cats prefer to claw fabric over leather - the leather is too smooth, and they prefer something with resistance. Keep a tall, sturdy sisal scratching post nearby and train them to use it instead of your furniture. A cat condo can also help; if they have their own "furniture", they'll be less likely to use yours. Clipping the claws also helps, but declawing is very painful and inhumane to the animal. Also, individual cats vary widely in their need to claw - some are much more vigorous than others. Make sure they have plenty of toys to get rid of pent up energy, too. I've never had a problem with my cats destroying furniture, and I have both leather and fabric. There is the occasional "pin prick" or small scratch (for example, if they slip while jumping on the furniture), but that's something you have to be willing to live with if you want cats. I think it's a small price to pay for the love they give in return. :-D

No - we needed to train my cat to leave the fabric couch alone but he has never bothered our leather chairs. But some cats will claw both. If you have a fabric one now that he doesn't touch, I wouldn't expect him to be more likely to claw leather.

My cat looooves to rub her face over any leather, be it shoes, luggage, clothes, wallets, whatever. She goes crazy, like catnip crazy. In fact I could use her to find out if something is real leather or fake. However, she doesn't scratch it. She sharpens her claws on wood or heavy tweed-like fabrics, the scratching post that has carpet on it, or a wicker basket. I think leather is too smooth for claw sharpening, because the only damage she has done to leather was to drool on it.

No, but they will claw it just cause they like to stretch and claw against a couch...but I would think between the two they would prefer fabric over a smooth surface since they do like a textured scratching object like couches, carpets ect..

My sister has a leather couch and a fabric couch, her crazy cats definitely go for the fabric one more.

cats will destroy the leather! even though it is smooth they will get on it and their sharp little claws go right through so before long it looks like a pincushion. the only thing they seem to leave alone is crushed velour. any fabric with texture that they can catch their claws in is what draws them. i've had my couch, loveseat and chair for five years and there are no scratch marks on any of it. owned by nine indoor only cats

I'm not sure but I'm just going to take a guess and say It doesn't matter the material because they'll still scratch but If you don't want them to scratch you can get a spray the you spray on the couch and when they claw at it and smell the spray they don't like it and don't claw no more

no, they are much more likely to sharpen their claws on a fabric couch than leather. If you put a scratching post near where your kitty sleeps he/she won't feel the need to destroy your furniture.

Cats don't have a preference. If they have claws and need to stretch them, they'll do that on any type of furniture you have if able and if they have their own scratching post.
You can train a cat to not claw on things but, if you're not there to say no they'll do it anyway. Have the front declawed and keep the hind claws trimmed as they can still do damage.

no, cats are more likely to claw fabric, unless you train them to use a scratching post. who would want a leather couch anyhow? they are so icky and uncomfortable.
