A friend of mine has a pistol and when I turn 21 he said he would sell it to me, and I am planning on getting a protection permit and hunting permit to carry the pistol.

Now when I was 8 or 9 my parents put me in a mental institution because they thought I was trying to commit suicide which I wasn't anyway would that affect me when I go to get the permits?

I am 19 years old now but would that still be on my record and affect me any?

Thanks =]

In my state, there are two permits. A purchase permit, is just to purchase a handgun. Your name, and previous addresses are ran through the state and local, SBI, and FBI criminal databases. You must also bring two character witnesses with you when you apply.......... The Concealed Carry Permit, requires the classroom instruction on "Deadly Force", and your fingerprints, social security number, and all previous addresses are ran through the state and local, SBI, FBI, and Mental Health Association Data Bases. The Mental Health Association check may reveal your stay at a facility........In that you were a minor, at the time of your stay, an attorney may be able to have the record "expunged" and clear your record........The Office of the Sheriff issues the CC permits, and believe me they are strict. Any blemish on your criminal or mental health record would preclude you from getting a "Concealed Carry Permit". The ATF "yellow form", which you fill out to buy even long guns, also asks if you were ever in a mental institution.........If you answer "yes", you are denied the option of buying a gun, and if you answer "no", and they find out, you can be charged with "perjury".........I would definitely talk to an attorney, and try to get it cleared up.............I wish you good luck....

Josh,

It depends on lots of things.

For instance, what state you live in. Some states are easier to get permits than others.

And what sort of diagnosis your doctor put down in the records.

Rather than rely on the semi-informed opinions of folks here, you need to contact the issuing agency and perhaps the attorney general's office in your state.

Good Luck.

With that record there is absolutely "no way in hell" you ever gonna get a pistol carry permit... That record can't go away.. you is stuck with it to death...

Getting a pistol carry permit these days is about a hard to get as it would be for you and me to dine with the president of the U.S. of A... Forget it!.. it will only get you locked up in the monkey cage... Just having it is worth a couple thou fine if you are caught... And if it's loaded, add another couple thou, and a stay in a cage... And if you hurt someone with it, and get caught, you is History mon... and in the cage you will have a very sore red bleedin' bum all day, and every day, if you are a cutie tight little one...

People will tell you it won't. But it will. It shouldn't but I have known plenty of people with a record. It has followed them all their lives. Their records are always being thrown up in their faces. It's a shame.
