Gum for sure is a no-no. They also tell you popcorn (b/c it gets stuck in so many places). Anything chewy/sticky.

Other tips: do what your orthodontist tells you to do. Seriously. If you don't you will just have them on for longer. Wear your rubber bands, even though it's a pain (literally, LOL), etc.

I know how you feel :/ Just stick through it and it'll all be worth while.

Your mouth will be sore for a few days. Don't worry, it'll get much better and you will be very used to them soon. If the metal is irritating your mouth, ask your orthodontist for a few packs of dental wax to stick on the brackets to create a barrier.

For now, its good to eat soft food. Try eating mashed potatos, soup, smoothies, pudding, ice cream, slushies, pasta, and apple sauce. Keep a bit of advil on-hand as well. It is also a good idea to take a pain medication before you go in for a tightening.

As far as what you can't eat with braces, here is a list:
Ice (its a bad habit for me, but try not to!)
Gum
Popcorn
Sandwiches (unless you cut them up)
Apples (same goes here. cut them up in small pieces first)
Toffee
Caramel (the hard, sticky kind)
Hard candy
Raw carrots
Hard chips (tortilla chips, doritos, etc)
Corn on the cob (cut the corn off)

These foods don't necessarily harm your braces every time, but there's always a chance.

You should have an appointment scheduled for the next month or two to get your braces tightened. For the first couple of months, your doctor will usually just change your ligatures (little colored rubber bands that hold your archwire in place) while your mouth adjusts to the new wire. Once you are ready, he or she will give you a thicker wire. Sometimes powerchains and other appliances are added in if needed.

If you need some help choosing your next color rubber bands, this website will help you plan:

A popped-off bracket is not an emergency, but it can lengthen the time you wear braces.

Try to take REALLY good care of your teeth and braces. This means brushing at least three times a day, flossing at least once before bed, and cleaning hard-to-reach places with a small, spiral-bristled brush provided at your orthodontist's office)

Also, when you get to the point when you have to wear rubber bands, wear them! Patients who take diligent care of their mouth and braces and who listen to their orthodontist's orders often get their braces off sooner than scheduled.

Good luck! :)

P.S.: Here is a website with all the orthodontic terminology. It will come in handy when trying to explain something to your doctor.

No Carbonated Beverages (Soda)
Ice is a BIG no no (if you bite down on it, it will crack the cement on your braces)
Hard Pizza Crust (Avoid hard edges)
Doritos, Tortilla Shells/Chips, Cheetos, Fritos, Pretzels, etc.-If it makes a crunch when you bite down, best to stay away.
Any hard Candy: Jolly Ranchers, Jawbreakers (Anything hard will cause damage)
Beef Jerky, Slim Jims, and corn nuts (It's bad for your teeth anyway)
Hard cookies: Oreos, etc. (if you want to eat it, soften it with milk)
POPCORN (don't even go there)
Biting Pens, Pencils, and Nails..
Stay away from Anything Sticky or chewy..
This is all...

I had braces for two years and got them off in October. :) It'll hurt for the first two-ish days after you get them on and each time they get tightened. Usually you get used to it and notice the pain fades. Often by the time you can't notice them anymore, it's time to go and get them re-tightened!

No-nos: gum, sticky foods like toffees, gummy worms (anything gummy, really), popcorn, corn on the cob, hard chips (ie. Lay's is softer than Doritos). Try to avoid eating foods that require you to bite off large chunks to chew, and in as many cases as possible, cut them into small pieces to chew on the back teeth.
There are a whole bunch of links if you Google them; here's one: http://www.greatsmiles.net/foods/foods.html
In case you get tempted to break the rules, I have a warning: A friend of mine decided to break the rules and has had to wear three different elastics at once, plus three more on three separate occasions to realign her jaw multiple times. She is on her FIFTH year of wearing braces, when they quoted her two.

While your teeth are sensitive, you may want to try soft alternatives like steamed vegetables in smaller pieces to chew on the back teeth not being held by braces. Usually your orthodontist or dentist will have already given you a list verbally or in a small pamphlet or something.

As for tips, make sure you brush and floss as often as possible. It's understandable that sometimes time constraints and context make it not always possible to brush and floss after every meal, but do so whenever you can. Not only does it keep your teeth from decaying from leftover foods or sugars from what you've eaten, but it keeps them clean. All too often people will avoid brushing regularly and end up with bracket marks that look bad on their teeth when the braces are removed.

Just follow the orthodontist's instructions to the best of your ability otherwise.

Okay, you can eat with braces on, but if it starts to hurt rub it with a cotton swab with a pea sized amount of tooth-paste on it that should help! After eating brush your teeth!
Floss regularly and you will have pearly whites in no time!

my granddaughter got braces 5 months ago, she's 14. She can't eat stuff like fritos, crunchy snacks,or basically anything that would get caught in the braces that wouldn't come out easily.

I should know. 23 people I know have braces. Including my friends. You can eat anything, just MAKE SURE to clean you braces after you eat. Or take out any ick between or inside your braces after you eat. If that will be a problem, then OBVIOUSLY resist the temptation to eat candy, apples(any fruit that you can peel), AND cheese. And try not to eat chips, crackers, or anything that can dissolve when you keep it in your mouth for a while. It MIGHT be hard taking them out with a toothpick later on. Well, GOOD LUCK!!

I think your dentist told you what to not eat. Your not suppose to eat bubble gum, or hard stuff i don't remember cause it was a long time ago. But all i know is use the wax he gave you. Your gums are going to be red and sore! Sorry but its so worth it!
