The person who answered 12 is correct.
In fact, any number can be the last number. The example of 12 is convenient, because it is the last number on a clock face (the 'next number' is back to 1 again).
A special branch of mathematics called 'modular arithmetic' (sometimes known as 'clock arithmetic') deals with this.
Any number can be thought of in terms of 12. For a number larger than 12, you simply go round the clock a sufficient number of times, and the resulting number will be the remaining number after going round sufficient times, but no remainder will be greater than twelve. (Modular arithmetic is therefore the mathematics of remainders).
For example, 3 is less than twelve. 15 has a remainder of three, after 12 is subtracted. 27 has a remainder of three, after 12 is subtracted twice. 3, 15 and 27 are modular equivalents, with respect to twelve.
As another example, 13 and 24 are modular equivalents with respect to 11 (both remainder 2).
Modular arithmetic frightens some high school and university students; but its basis is quite simple, and it had important applications dealing with large numbers, and in number theory.

Hi,
There is no "last number." Tell your son this: If you give me the largest number you can possibly conceive, all I need do is add one to that number, and I have a larger number.

In reality, there is no last number in the number system. Though, infinity is not a number-its real definition is that it is what you call something that doesn't end-IT IS NOT A NUMBER! But really there is no last number in the number system.

The answer would be one..everything is completely completed. As in a circle...Only if you believe that one is the first number though.
