My bbq buddy says you can now grill/broil pork to medium -rare but my med-student friend says no way. Do I need to be paranoid at having parasites in my brain or can I just enjoy my pig meat?

In the USA, thichinosis in store bought pork NOT an issue due to controlled diets/feeds. No more slop for modern pigs.

The only recent cases of trichinosis has been from undercooked game meat - bears.

Is trichinellosis common in the United States?
Infection was once very common and usually caused by ingestion of undercooked pork. However, infection is now relatively rare. During 1997-2001, an average of 12 cases per year were reported. The number of cases has decreased because of legislation prohibiting the feeding of raw-meat garbage to hogs, commercial and home freezing of pork, and the public awareness of the danger of eating raw or undercooked pork products. Cases are less commonly associated with pork products and more often associated with eating raw or undercooked wild game meats.

No No NO 97.25% of all deaths worldwide are Pork related. Even if you just know someone who smelled pork cooking the parasites can get to you're brain telepathicly.Pork is the most deadly substance known to man. NORAD stopped using nuclear bombs in 1961 , and switched over to the ultimate Killer PORK. Today's leaner pork has but 1% of the former pork's killing power and still it's stronger than u-238. Even Osama does not approve of PORK bombs.

Webber's bbq cookbook said properly done pork should be at 60 degrees Celsius after resting and should be SLIGHTLY pink in the center.

i think these days as long as your buying it from a health inspected store it should be fine. regulations are allot more strict these days. but always practice a safe meat handling regime when dealing with raw meat

Trichinosis hasn't been a real issue for years - eat your pork!

It wasn't really a widespread threat to begin with, but now that it's been banned to feed the pigs garbage and such, the instances are really rare. (no pun intended) I still won't do mine to medium rare, but pink in the middle (as long as it's fresh and been handled properly) is my common method - and I haven't died yet! (obviously)

I'm not trusting anyone when they say pork doesn't have to be cooked throughly. They're just asking for trouble. Eat your pork cooked thoroughly & you'll be fine. Trichinosis has always been an issue when it comes to poorly prepared pork & always will be. Don't be paranoid just use common sense.

Supposedly it is not an issue anymore. However, I still like to make sure my pork is cooked well.
