A black lab came to my house and was hanging around. It is going to be very cold so I brought him in. He is seems to be a great dog. He didn't have a collar on but I can tell he is healthy and seemed to be taken care of. I am going to post flyers to see if he is wanted. But my husband and kids really took to him. What should I do??

By LAW you NEED to take him to the nearest animal shelter where he was found so his family can find him easily. There they can scan him for a microchip as well. When you take the dog to the shelter you can put "First Rights" on the dog so after the holding period of 3 days you can adopt him free and clear and he can be then yours forever. If you keep the dog at your house that is considered steeling in the law books and they can pursue legal action towards you for keeping the owner from finding their beloved pet.

Leave a flyer at the local police station and the library too.
If no owner is found then have the vet make sure he is in good health and up to date on all his vaccines.
Keep in mind that a dog is like a person. They need attention, and over time a pet can become an annoyance. You must be able to invest the time in making him a real part of the family.

Also, despite local laws you should make sure the shelter is a sterile place. Many an animal shelter has turned into a disease farm, spreading germs and parasites among the animals they are entrusted to care for.

Keep him for now and post a Found note at your local pound, vet, SPCA, or shelter's Lost and Found board. When someone loses a pet, the first place they check will be the local pound or animal shelter before they ask around. They can also check for microchip implants. The local vet can can also do this, and who knows, if you have one vet in your neighborhood , the lab might be his patient and he can reunite him with the owners.

Also watch our for posters in the park or on poles. If your dog had a family with kids, they will usually take the time out to put up posters.

You could also put out a Found ad in your local neighborhood paper or church meet (if you have one).

If no one comes forward within a few days, go get a license and enjoy your new dog. Make sure that all the legal procedures are followed for the adoption. However be prepared if someone comes to claim him and dispute your ownership.

Check out http://www.fidofinder.com/ where lost and found dogs are registered in the US and Canada. If you decide to keep the labbie after some unsuccessful effort of searching for the real owner, you can register him here, too, so that you don't lose him as well.

Make sure the children know they might not be able to keep him. Post fliers and call local animals shelters to see if anyone clames him. Take him to the vet just to make sure nothing is wrong with him and make sure he gets a rabies vacine also your vet can scan for a microchip. If he didn't have a color and it doesn't look like he had one on resently then he was proubably dumped.
Only say that it looks to be a lab in your fliers then you can use an details they use to id the dog to help determan if it is the real owner.

If he looks well-taken care of, he probably was and his owner may be going out of their mind trying to locate him. Post flyers, call the area vet's and let them know you have found him. Perhaps run an ad in the paper. If after making an honest effort to find the owner, no one comes forward to claim him, he is yours. If you don't try to find his owner first, you will always worry that someone will discover that you have him and come to get him. By then, you and your family will be more attached to him then you are already. Good luck to you. I hope you will find that he has a good home or I know you will provide one for him if he doesn't.

Hey Tig,
Your family feelings notwithstanding remind them that this must be someone's pet who may have gotten away by accident, and wouldnt they appreciate it if someone truly made an effort to return him?
And dont post any more info than necessary, make any responders ID the dog insome way - scars, quirks etc so you dont turn the dog over to someone who might have a less than kind agenda.

Take him to the vet and get him scanned for a microchip. Check him for a tattoo. If he has nothing and no one answers your flyers, then keep him.

Good idea with the flyers.
Take him to the vet to see if he is in good health.
If no one replys to your posters in 2 months ... KEEP HIM!
But untill then treat him as if it was your dog!

Most cities require you to bring a stray (or lost) dog to the city animal control. If you keep him, you can have legal action taken against you.If you want to go the legal way, take him to the pound and put your name on a waiting list to adopt. If he is not claimed, then you can adopt him. You can see if there are any lost dog posters in your area, but you really should turn him in.
