We live in TN. My mother is living with us. She abuses her prescriptions. She takes xanax, soma, and some kind of pain medicine. She is in a perpetual stupor and denies she has a problem. I've tried calling the ambulance, calling Drug Rehabs, Seeing a counselor and everyone says their hands are tied. As long as she can deny help legally no one can do anything. So legally I have to sit and watch her die. She has been a sever addict since I was born. 28 years. She's irresponsible, irrational and such a victim. What do I do? Who can step in?

An addict has to admit they have a problem before anyone can help them. Adults cannot be involuntarily committed unless they are at risk of harming themselves or others, or a court judges them incompetent. The best thing you can do for her and you is to walk away. That might stun her into an awareness of what bad shape she is in, and it would give you a break.

Is she getting these from more than one doctor? If so, tell her primary care physician about it. If not, tell him about her behavior. There may be a legitimate reason for the amount of medication she is getting. I have been going through this with my wife for the last few years and without that number of meds, she would have killed herself to escape the pain by now.

She finally got some relief when acupuncture was suggested and tried.

If she is getting these prescriptions by her own physician, you might can try setting up an appointment with them separately or try just placing a call to them and letting them know what she is doing. A reputable doctor would take a concerned daughter seriously. He/she should know that his/her patient is not taking the medication as prescribed and may need help.

Do not hide the medicine, this could make her crash and become suicidal seeing the drugs she is on.

How is she "abusing" them? Are they all prescribed to her by the same doctor? If not, call the cops if you want to play hardball.

Contact her doctor one on one and let him know your concerns and see if they will wean her onto a lower dose.

If what she is doing is legal and medically supported, maybe your mom just is not the mom you want her to be and you should disconnect yourself.

There's not much you can do. You can try to talk with her pharmacist or MD. If a pharmacist knows the controlled drugs are not for a valid medical reason, he/she cannot fill them. The pharmacist can call other pharmacists to determine if she has been pharmacy shopping.

ordering drugs online can cut costs considerably. A Consumer Reports study found that savings can reach 25% or more. There are so many pharmacies available which provides FDA approved medicines without any issues.

These sites also calls immediately after the order to confirm your order. I've had nothing but great success and interactions with the on line folks. Shipping took a 8 days, but that was because of the postal service used.
