Water hydrates your body but it doesn't act like a moisturizer. What "lubes" your throat is mucous. Your body isn't producing enough mucous or tears it seems at night which causes them to go dry. You are also breathing out of your mouth most likely at night which will definately dry out your throat. See if you can consciously breath out of your nose the next time you go to bed. If this doesn't help any or isn't the problem i would try drinking milk before you go to bed. Milk will coat your throat and sooth and moisten (because of fat) your throat. Keep in mind that mucous is 95% water so you have to be hydrated in order for sufficient and quality mucous to be produced. Now there are a multitude of reasons of why you aren't producing sufficient quantities of mucous, one being that your marrow doesn't produce enough nuetrophils (component of mucous). You need to see an ear nose and throat doctor. Any clinic should have these doctors on staff. Hope this helps, stay healthy.
PS. Do not accept from any doctor "Well we'll try you on a medication and see if it helps." This is out of ignorance of the doctor. Medications might help (sucralafate) but you want to find out the reason.

It sounds like you might have allergies that are causing a post-nasal drip all night long that irritates your throat and leaves a nasty taste in your mouth. An anti-histamine/allergy medicine (Claritin, etc.) could very well help, but I'd check with the doc first to make sure it's nothing more than allergies. Something as simple as dust in your bedroom, old bed pillows, dust mites (which are EVERYWHERE) could cause allergic symptoms. Feel better!

Most likely answer is that you sleep with your mouth open. Do you have a stuffy nose or sinus problems that cause you to have trouble breathing through your nose. Try a humidifier at night and breath rite strips to your nose. Chances are if it were a serious health condition you would have had other symptoms develop by now since it sounds like you have had this problem for awhile. Maybe you are sleeping with your eyes open also. Try lubricating eye drops before going to bed at night.

Do you have a sticky feeling in your mouth? High sugar content in your diet can result to secretions of enzymes that can make your mouth dry and your throat hurt.

you might be sleeping with your mouth open. is there drool on the pillow? try tucking your head into your neck a bit, if comfy. gargle some salt water in the mornings to take away the pain and swelling.

you probably have post nasal drip when you sleep. Not an unusual problem, but see a doctor to get medicine for it.
