I'm trying to make vegan banana bread, and I don't have baking powder. I have baking soda, and the recipe calls for both.

Use 1/4 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp cream of tartar and 1/4 tsp cornflour instead of baking powder.

You will have to add more soda and some extra acid for the soda to work alone - baking powder is self reacting with heat. Look at what the current soda is reacting with and see if you can add more - buttermilk, lemon juice, or a small amount of vinegar in the milk.

1/4 tsp baking soda plus 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar will do the trick.

Baking powder causes a lightening of the bread. If you don't use it, it will be heavy and thick. You really do need it for bread.

If the recipe calls for both, you have to use both. They are not interchangeable.
