If you get bit by a mangy stray, and it breaks the skin, and you go to the ER, what do they do to you? What kind of shots do they give you? How often do you change the bandages? Do they keep you overnight? Please help!

note~ I didn't get bit by a dog, this is research for a book.

If the dog cannot be found, you will have to get the rabies series. It is NOT shots in the stomach!! They are in the arm like other vaccines. They cause soreness like the tetnus shot.

If the dog can be found, it will be either killed and brain section sent for testing, or quarantined for signs of illness.

* they would probably give you a tetnus shot and antibiotics also. Doubt they would keep you overnight!!! Bandage changes are usually daily.

Was the other dog that was bitten up to date on rabies vaccination??? If so, most vets would advise a booster if the biting dog is not found.
If the dog that got bitten was NOT vaccinated, and the stray was not found, there can be a quarantine issue and you have to refer to local laws for that.
If the dog was vaccinated and the stray is found, the stray will either be tested or quarantined and problem solved.
IF the stray happen to come back positive, and the bitten dog was NOT vaccinated, they would most likely have it euthanized.

I was attacked by a stray about a year ago and the humane society did catch him. I went in the hospital for a couple hours, got some stitches, anti-biotics, teatnut shot, and some pain killers. They held the dog for 10 days in quarntine and deemed it "not rabid" but very aggressive and they did not believe he could be helped or adopted so no owner was found and he was humanely euthanized.

I know this from experience.
1. Thy don;t keep you unless it is infected/deep.
2, You get an auto tetnis shot, which is usually several nasty shots.
3. You change them every day (or twice a day) unless you get stiches which you keep for 2 weeks approximatively and then have to come back for removal.

not sure what they do to you. they might give you antibiotics but otherwise they will keep an eye on you. they will try to find the dog and put him in quarantine for 10 days because if he has rabies it will show up by then. I absolutely love your corgi picture. I love corgis so much!

First of all, let me say I'm glad to hear you were not actually bitten. Instead of typing a lot, I found a web site that may be helpful. Good luck.

they will just give you a tetanus jab, and clean the wound.
