ok, my mom is letting me cook xmas dinner. i have a budget of $150. my mom already bought the turkey and ham. i'm making everything from scratch. i want to know how much food i can make with my budget. about 5 sides. a cookie tray with 4 types of cookies. and 5 cakes. now reminder everything is made from scratch.
for my desserts and cookies i really only have to buy 1 ingredient because ingredients like flour butter eggs sugar brown sugar...i have around the house.
i made out two menus. 1 menu of all i wanted to make...then a cheap menu that is sufficient but doesn't include everything i want. i don't really grocery shop. i eat day to day. so i dont know how much $150 can buy in small town texas.

Make a list of what you want to have and a list of what you have in the house.

Compare lists and see what you have to buy for your baking and your side dishes so you dont buy something your already have.

Check your store newspaper and see whats on sale, how much you need and how much you will be spending on that particular dish (per person also).

Check the recipes and see just how much of one ingredient is need for that recipe so you have enough and dont run of of an ingredient.
ie: 4 cups of flour per cookie recipe and find out how much flour will be left for another recipe. you don't want to run out of you ingredients while you are baking.

The main ingredients for you dinner are already purchased so the sides shouldn't cost you that much depending on what you have on the menu.

hope this helps. good luck.

How many people will be there? That is important to know. Right now you have 5 cakes and each cake can do 10 - 12 pieces. That is a lot of cake!

If the high items are already there - the turkey and the ham - you could do A LOT with $150.

Do you want suggestions for sides?

Please edit your question - I can make the penny dance when it comes to food.

Also, do you have an Aldi store near by? Aldi can make your $ go twice as far.

Let's see... prices from an online grocery...
5 lb potatoes - $2
3 lb yams - $3
butter - $2
marshmallows - $2
cranberry sauce - $1/can
cream cheese - $2/brick
lettuce - $1/head
carrots - $1.50/bag
celery - $3
dressing - $3/bottle
gravy from the turkey drippings just takes a little flour +salt/pepper
frozen yeast bread - $4 for 5lb

This may not be the kind of stuff you want to serve, but I think it demonstrates you can do a LOT with $150.

If you have most of the ingredients 150 can go far.. remember making stuff from scratch is way cheaper then premade food. what else do you really need to buy? i think you will be surprised how far money can go especially when on a budget.good luck.

Well, you need to take your shopping list to the store.
Check prices, we can't tell you from anywhere else.
You'll save money by buying bulk-food not processed.
