Some people with SCD live into their mid 40s to early 50s. The blood cells in SCD are sickle shaped and clump together easier than a normal red blood cell does which can slip through smaller spaces such as blood vessels. For some, congestion over years of these sickled cells clumping together causes them to obstruct or clot inside of organs causing organ failure and eventual death. Other acquire infections or suffer from a stroke which can lead to death.
