Anywhere you have tradition and rites of passage, you have the opportunity for someone to get carried away and start hazing. The U.S. Navy has taken HUGE strides in preventing hazing in the past 15 years. Common practices and long-held traditions that even bordered on, or gave the impression of hazing have been changed. Promotions, advancements, crossing ceremonies - all have greatly changed in recent years. However, as I said, there is always one or two, generally who are confused between the ceremony of an event and the hazing that had been associated with it, who call it tradition. But, if you think you're going to see behavior like in Officer and a Gentleman, or in TAPS, or the Lords of Discipline - no. And if you see even a hint - all you have to do is say something - to pretty much anyone.

First, read the definition: 1 a: to harass by exacting unnecessary or disagreeable work b: to harass by banter, ridicule, or criticism.
So by definition, "hazing" is subjective... is it "harassment" or "motivational" ?
As others have pointed out... ABUSIVE "Hazing" has really diminished in the last 10-20 years, as sadly, has a great number of TRADITIONS. This is GREATLY a result of an incident at the Navy's RSS (Rescue Swimmer School) in 1987 in which a student died of heart-failure during a strenuous training evolution.
They've killed the good old "tacking on the Crow", "drinking your wings", and the Line-Crossing had been toned WAY down.
MY OCS class in 1993 was so damned tame it almost made me cry... I went thru RSS two classes ahead of the student who died.

Hazing is extremely discouraged in the Navy. Any violators may be punished through the Uniformed Code of Military Justice.
Alas, no more BT punches.

No there is no hazing in OCS. They will get your attention without hazing. They cannot hit you but they can yell, scream, etc and will. It will be tough but not anything you can't get through.
Hazing is not just the way it is as someone suggested.

You have to define your term. What some may think as hazing is a right of passage ot others.

i've heard about hazing and the navy at some point in time. there were a few stories about them being pretty brutal. i guess it all depends on who you have along with you...and if you're the newby then your going to get ****...no matter what. thats how it works in the armed forces, unfortunately.

hazing is a part of military life and a tradition, a rite of passage if you will. unfortunately because of the ignorance and meddling of Mothers of America, we now have to be much more subtle about it, otherwise there is severe penalties. its bullsh*t. thanks a lot MOA.
