Why do some traditional pagans consider Wicca and similar new-age belief systems to be fluffy ?

A variety of reasons. Some people have made a lot of money by selling a bunch of "fluffy bunny" nonsense online and at fairs and things, like love spells and potions special candles and a whole lot of silly nonsense that gullible and uneducated new wannabe Witches and Wiccans just gobble up and put out big bucks for. There is more, but you get the idea.

The fluffies often want to show their "Witchiness" by wearing black flowing clothes and enormous pents, and they haven't a clue of what real craft practice entails.

The bottom line is that they are considered fluffy because they are not the real thing, they are just for show.

I hasten to add that NOT ALL WICCANS OR WITCHES ARE FLUFFIES, and that some of us have started there in our efforts to find our way to our individual paths.

A real Witch finds the way to the real thing, a wannabe eventually gets tired of the performance and washes the black eyeliner off.

I'm nodding along with the other responses and wanted to add a few things. New Age is not a religion, if anything it is pseudo science. It's all about "me". How a person can feel better, look better have all sorts of wonderful powers and insights, but not really about true spirituality, growth or dealing with reality.

Neo-paganism has some similar "all light and sparkles" paths, but most are not. Most humans have lived enough of life to know that anything that is all light and sparkle is bunk...and that is what people refer to as fluffyism, the refusal or unwillingness to deal with reality.

I am not Wiccan. It does seem that Wiccan, due to it's being rather visible and "in" lately has been a thing that many fluffy types have latched on to, and many authors and others have played back by catering to the all light and sparkles bunch, who think you can buy your faith pre packaged while you are picking up coffee at B&N.

It's harder to try to morph some of the Old School paganism..Norse, Egyptian, etc to all light and sparkles, because it is so clearly NOT...so it is sort of a self weeding process.

A. Wicca's not New Age. Most New Age belief systems are Christian and Wicca fails any good test of New Age-ism.

B. Some Wicca is fluffy.

C. Some people like to judge things, it makes them feel better about themselves.

Edit: Newbies and Fluffies are not the same thing. Some Fluffies have been spreading their nonsense for 30 years or more still reacting like rabid hogs to anyone who disagrees with their often fascist worldview.

I'm a traditional (non-wiccan) witch, but I was Wiccan for several years. It's not Wicca itself that is fluffy, it's some of the practitioners that are. More mature Wiccans (mature meaning spiritually mature and thoroughly educated in the religion) are not fluffy.

btw, Wicca is not New Age. Wicca is a form of Neo-Paganism.

Good question.

Traditional pagans??? Do you mean Old Guard? Most of the people who call themselves Wiccans have never been trained in a specific tradition of Wicca and therefore are lacking some of the inner teachings. Not everything is taught in the books that can be found on a store's shelves. That does not mean they don't believe in their religion any less but are just somewhat lacking in traditional knowledge. I also don't believe any ONE tradition has all the answers.

Because some forms of Wicca ARE fluffy. And please don't call me "New Age". I do not believe that particular shoe fits.

Some forms of Wicca -- the ones that seem to get the most press -- are very fluffy and faddish. Other forms are quiet, sincere, and deeply spiritually challenging and fulfilling. We don't have a long history to fall back on, so we're still in the early stages of our journey as a religion, but all faiths start somewhere. I'll be very interested to see where Wicca is in, say, fifty years.

Because there are a lot of fluffy Wiccans. Unfortunately for Wiccans it's become rather commercialized and a lot of bad info is out there. Anyone thinks they can read a web page and be Wiccan High Priestess.
That being said, I've met some truely bad *** Wiccans. Five minutes of conversation with one and you can tell if they are fluffy or not. We in the pagan community, Wiccans as well, don't like bunnies. I even bunny hunt. *wicked grin*

I don't know if it's so much considering "Wicca" to be fluffy, but rather considering the "Charmed and Craft crowd who follow Saint Silver and cry about the 9 million witches burned at Salem" to be fluffy...?

That is a curious stance isn't it? I wonder about that myself.

Honestly I think looking at newbies as "fluffy" is rubbish. We were all new at some point, and I'm sure we've all asked dumb questions and made mistakes along the way. And for those who look down upon all of the newbies, I think they just need to be reminded about their own journey to the Goddess and God.
