Every doctor I have gone to see has either thought I am neurotic, won't give me medication I need (antidepressants and anxiety meds) even though I had a panic attack AT the dr office. I'm not going to make a short story long here but there have been many other instances like this with many other doctors. I want to give up, never go to another one. I'm just wondering if anyone can share their experiences, maybe someone can make me feel a little better about this. Right now I think that a good doctor is just a fantasy character, right up there with unicorns and frog princes. I don't think I'm doing anything wrong. I'm not a drug seeker, I just want meds that I legitimately need, and a doctor that seems to actually give a crap about his/her patients. Should I just give up on finding one? I'm about at the point where I am resigned to live with untreated medical issues because of the anxiety it causes me to look for doctors and keep finding nothing but pure JERKS. Any input appreciated.

I have been on these meds before. The dr that first diagnosed me and treated me passed away. I have tried counseling. I cannot afford a psych. b/c my insurance wiil not cover it and i can't afford out of pocket. I have tried the otc meds, they don't help. my guess is most of you ppl say NO DRUGS b/c you either do not have what i have or do not have it to the degree i have it. Some ppl NEED those meds- that's why they're there. It is really a shame that people automatically think that if a person needs to be on meds it is b/c they are drug addict or drug dependent. so many ppl are so closed minded to what is a real medical condition. This may be a stretch but would someone send a cancer patient for hypnosis, or tell them to excercise more like that's going to cure it? In some ppl these things are caused by heredetary inbalances in the brain (as they are in my case) which makes it just as much a physical illness as well as a mental one. Andee thanks so far u have my vote for best answer.

In your first sentence you say that the doctors you go to think you are neurotic. If a doctor truly thinks you are neurotic, then that doctor would prescribe medication or send you to a specialist. Anxiety and depression are both forms of neurosis. Based on the your writing and communication style in your paragraph above, I can sort of see how there may be a communication problem between you and your doctor. You probably aren't very convincing or credible to any doctor you've seen. Write down the anxiety and depression symptoms that you are experiencing and when you experience them. Write down when you have your panic attacks and what you were doing at the time you had them. After you've done that for 2 weeks, take those papers to the doctor and tell him/her about them. Ask the doc what you can do about the problems you are experiencing. Do not specifically ask for medication. Let the doctor decide if and which medication you should have. If a doctor does not give you medication, then he/she should give you advice on what to do about your symptoms.

My first question for you would be how do you know you need these meds, have you been on them before? I understand what you mean, because my mom has had the opposite problem, doctors that just want to medicate rather than work on the issues. Finally, she found a doctor who is taking care of both, and things are on their way to being resolved.
So to answer your question there are good doctors out there but you may want to give them more of a chance than just one visit so they can see what the issues are.

I am so sorry you are feeling this way. Yes, there are very good Dr. out there. It could be you are seeking the wrong type Dr. one that does not Specialize in your medical problem. unfortunately all Dr.s usually have their "specialty", family Dr. covers "general run of the mill type things" and if good, will refer you to another if feels he cannot help you. Internal Med Dr. deals with the body internal problems, and so on. Try seeing a Psychologist, don't panic at the title, lol..They know more about these things.
More importantly don't give up.It is difficult to find a Dr we can feel comfortable with and have confidence in, unfortunately a lot of times we wait until we "need" one to do it, and that creates added stress and expectations. hang in there. good luck.

The first psychiatrist I went to shouldn't be allowed to practice.
He was arrogant (he told me what my problem was without even asking me what was wrong) he lied straight to my face (tell him where my guns were OR go to the hospital....I told AND went anyway) and he prescribed such a large dose of antidepressants I ended up in the ER. He did cure my suicidal thoughts...now I have homicidal thoughts about him.
My personal physician is the greatest Dr. in the world. She took the time to listen to me and not jump to conclusions. She was the one who started me on antidepressants and followed the dosing guidelines before increasing the dose.
The psychiatrist I saw 2nd was also wonderful. She did the original interview in her office (not a zillion page questionnaire and interview by an assistant like a certain quack I know...)
I also have been seeing a counselor. She has helped me more than any pill ever.
Do you see a common thread in this?
Male psychiatrist (from south central Asia) as opposed to female physician, psychiatrist, and counselor.

Yes there is! I can relate! Its just that some doctors have more experience than others. I went to this walk in clinic with a puffed up eyelid, and i started coughing and the guys like "Oh! you have a cough!" He fully ignored my eye and prescribed me medicine which cost about $300. In two days i was fine, and i didnt take the medication once. I went to my family doctor (he is amazing:D) and he prescribed me some medicine for my eyelid, and i was fine within a week.

too bad you don't have my doctor, she is too quick to prescribe (I am anti-drug as much as possible) maybe they don't feel you are so far into needing those types of drugs, they are best avoided if possible, I'm not saying that I think they are always unnecessary, some people do need them. If you can't get prescriptions, try something otc like St John's Wort... it is very helpful, I used to take it. look up some info on it and see if it is something you would benefit from

You can find enablers in many different places, it sounds like you are seeing good doctors. Treating anxiety with medication is ridiculous. You can control these things yourself see a psychologist that dose not have the ability to prescribe drugs.
