If you are bad AND rich

It's not a dollar issue, it's a heart issue. What matters is not how much money we have, but who our God is --- is it the Lord? Or is it our wealth? The reason Jesus said it is easier for a camel to get through the eye of a needle than a rich man to get to heaven is because often, when we have 'everything', we don't realize that we need Him. Ever notice that people who live in poverty are very clear on the truth about what they are? They're the same as everyone else, of course, but they *know* they are needy, and rich people often don't, because their wealth is a safety net --- so they think. Conversely, if you are having to ask God for your daily bread and you know that's the only way you are going to get to eat that day, you have no illusions about who the giver of all good things is. It ain't the guy who signs your paycheck. It is God.

Look at Job and Abraham. They were both incredibly wealthy, but they still seem to have been some of God's most beloved servants. It isn't the money, it is what you worship.

God bless. :)

Have you ever heard of prosperity theology? It states that the bigger car you drive to the biggest church (the one that has the built in Starbucks & ATM's) wearing the most expensive designer fashions, and donate the most money to dictates your place in Heaven. This propsperity theology also dictates that the more money you have, the more you are excused from helping the poor in your community or lending any kind of helping hand to any person in need anywhere.

Sad, but these kind of people aren't really "Christians". They seem to be pretty lost.

From the "Bible On the Poor" website:

Americans like money; the American dream is about being rich. No wonder we're susceptible to religious quacks who promise riches to those who believe in God.
We do find promises of reward in the Bible-- to those who serve the poor. God's making a very simple proposal here: "You help the poor, and I'll repay it."

Full disclosure: there's a little bait-and-switch going on. Jesus promises treasure in heaven. In the sociology of religion game, we call this spiritualization. In plain English, it means that Jesus is asking us to go way past our comfort level in giving things away. And in not getting them back.

Who are the poor, by the way? Among our rationalizations is the feeling that the actual poor aren't people we really have to pay attention to. They may be of different races, or not speak our language, or aren't moral enough for us; they may be illegal immigrants. (Imagine that, a class of human beings that are illegal. Imagine explaining that to God.)

They are obviously talking about being rich in possessions not only money. You are too rich when you have more than you need. Like St. Francis of Assisi who was a model of being rich in "faith" which Jesus wants.

lol - I'm not any kind of rich. But I have enough.
A complete quote, by the way, is "You can never be too rich or too thin", usually attributed to Wallis Simpson,, wife of the former King Edward VIII.
She was wrong on both counts.

The bad thing about being rich and a Christian is when you praise material things as if they were God. And when you get so greedy that you don't care about anybody but yourself.

In my opinion it is not about a number...(BTW, if you own a house, you are in the top 95 percentile in the world...crazy.) God knows your heart. If you are being selfish with your money (rich or not), by not giving the 10% that He commands us to give back to him, by being materialistic, or by not helping others who are in need when called to do so, this does not please Him.
BTW money is not the root of all evil. Money, in itself, is not evil. It is the LOVE of money.
