It means that Jesus possesses the same uncreated Divine nature as the Father, and thus the Holy Spirit explicitly calls JESUS God, and applies unique titles, attribute and glory to Him, that are only reserved for God.

The Pharisees understood that to call oneself The Son of God meant claiming equality with God in nature, which no one else has (all else was created), thus they sought to kill Jesus because "thou, being a man, makest thyself God." John 10:33), as He said that "that God was his Father, making Himself equal with God" (Jn. 5:18).

Thomas had it right when he said to Jesus, "My Lord and my God" (Jn 20:28).

For the "definite article" types (so-called JW's try to make Jesus into "a god", which is blasphemous, as no one can be compared to God as regards truly being God in nature: Is. 40:25), to be consistent they would also have to translate it "a god" in Jn. 1:1:1a, 6, 12, 13, etc. Context makes it plain that "God" is correct, as Deity is involved, and Jesus is not just a mighty God, which God is, but He is the Almighty: Rv. 1:8.

Good question .. I donot believe that Jesus Is God and this is an arguement I have with other Christians .. but I do believe in a way we have gods light inside of us which is a part if him. I dont believe in worshipping the god with in either .. also other day I read abit in romans where it says that we can become joint heirs with christ so .. that pleased me as well .. but I am a very spiritual person. If your asking me is Jesus God ? Then my answer is not a chance .. and I think that the bible has been translated so many times , plus some books where kicked out .. and not to mention the fact that it was 1000's of years later than some smart alec decided to invent the trinity and hence making a 3 in 1 godhead which more veers towards paganism .. which inturn breaks a commandment of of there being only one God .. so for me I am a christian but other christians believe differently to me .. Even thou as a child I went to church I must have been protected and my ears closed to trinitarian talk . I dont know why cos I only heard about it the other year and I am 30 in Jan . so as an adult I will not conform to there beliefs but what I know . I m sorry for rambling on but I feel Im on a crusade hahahah I dont know .. I suppose there is not much of a church for me nowadays .. but I will always have the Almighty no matter what . Did you also read the genealogy of Jesus .. they use Josephs ancestorship and not Mary's .. so I guess there is a few things there to look at as well .. I hope some one comes up with a better answer as I am biased here .... much love and God bless x x x x x x

It means Jesus served as God's messenger. He delivered God's message. A word was a messenger. In the 1st century, Kings and ones in authority had someone deliver a message for them, same with Jesus, he was a messenger for someone in authority.

It's interesting, most people use this to say Jesus is God, but a messenger is LOWER than the one who sent the message; hence being a messenger.

Also, the indefinite article "a" does not appear in the Greek language, so of course it will say the word was god in the English translation. That is why in Acts 28:4-6, according to the KJV, Paul is also god...meaning he is part of the trinity also. It only makes sense that the indefinite article "a" be in that verse, but not John 1:1??

EDIT...Everyone seems to go to vs. 14 where it mentions the Word became flesh, so that proves Jesus was god. If you go down 4 verses, it says no man has seen god at ANY TIME. How is that? If Jesus was God, man has seen God, but the Bible says we have not seen God. Explain that to me.

You stated:
What does it mean in John 1:1, when it says In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the? Word was God?

First you need to go back to Genesis. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth and the earth was without form in darkness and God moved upon the face of the deep. Genesis 1:1-2

God is his word; the bible says that heaven and earth shall pass away but his words shall never pass. God created the earth and everything in it by his spoken words. God is a God of his word and when he speaks it appears. As you saw everything that he created was good.

You need to read the following verses in John to get the complete thought. The bible tells you if you search. Search the scriptures for in them ye think ye have eternal life, they are they that testify of me.

I hope that this helped you

John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:14
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Jesus was the Word made flesh

EDIT:
I John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are One.

EDIT: God is I AM

Exodus 3:14
And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

It means that Jesus had a Beginning. Unlike Almighty God who did not, does not have a Beginning. Seperate Spirit Beings.
Jesus also said that his life depended on his father.
Just as the living Father sent me forth and I live because of the Father, he also that feeds on me, even that one will live because of me.( john 6:57)
Jesus while on earth could not Survive without the Father. Enough Said.

In the beginning was the Word (Jesus) and the Word (Jesus) was with God ,and the Word (Jesus ) was God.The same was in the beginning with God.All things were made through Him.....
To cross reference this ,read Collosians 1 and Hebrews 1,the put it in context to Genesis 1 where it says ..."God said 'Let us create man in our image'...."
That is the trinity talking among themselves.Jesus as told in John,Collosians and Hebrews was there at creation,He also was one of the "us" that created man.
Jesus was God from all eternity. To us ,He is God the Son since it helps us understand it better. And the Son of God ,so we can put Him in human terms...anthropomorphisize Him so to speak.

The article "a" was left out. The word refers to Jesus and Jesus is a God but not the Almight God. (see Psalms 83:18)
