My artist said taking hot showers will open up the pores of the tat area and damage the art; after how long should I wait to take hot showers again?

2-3 weeks is indeed the minimum time, but depending on how long you soak you may wish to wait longer. If you get yourself prune-like, for example, I'd say go for a month or more.

To a certain extent this will be self-limiting in my experience; I can't handle hot water shortly after getting work done anyhow.

i've never waited to take a shower, i don't ever take "hot hot" showers. i have always been told not to let the water beat down on the fresh tattoo because it could damage it. my artist actually suggests washing the tattoo with water as warm as you can stand it with the fingertips and fragrance free soap a few times a day.

It's really not good to take HPT showers cause your skin will dry out, new ink or not. But, I know they are hard to resist, wait at least 2-3 weeks.
