I am crate training my dog and I take him out everytime he wakes up after a nap and so on. But i do not know if he understands that he cannot pee in his crate. I made the crate even smaller so he can only get up and turn around and i also took his blanket. And when i take him out sometimes he either just stands there or lays down. Should this work and if not what should i do?

You're doing everything right with the crate. If you take him out and he doesn't go ... give him about 5-10 mins. If he still just stands there, put him right back into his crate and try again 20 mins. later. He'll soon learn that once he's out of his crate and taken outside, he has do his business. He'll realize that if he doesn't go, he has to keep on holding it b/c he's back in his crate. Don't let him run around if you take him outside and he doesn't go. He'll have an accident in your house.

Well if he's still a puppy it will take a while for him to get use to the training. Dogs, like humans...well most dogs... don't like to be kept in a cage where they had peed. So if the cage is small enough to where if he pees he can't get away from it, he should quickly learn not to pee in there. It's kind of hard to give you a better answer, without knowing how old the dog is and how long you've been doing this.

At 11 weeks old he will pee in the crate, this is to be expected, you want to take him out about 15 minutes after he eats, or after you have played with him for the same length of time, you have to learn their schedule. If this is a small breed puppy it will take longer to break him than a larger breed as their bladder and kidneys do not mature as fast as a larger breed dog....Keep shredded newspapers in the crate until he is house trained, they are easier to clean up and the shredded newspaper helps cover where they have pottied..It takes patience and persistence, remember you have to learn their schedule, they know when they have to go..it's not when you want them to go.

It may take a while he is still very much a baby. He cant really be expected to hold his urine, etc too long. And stay outside with him until he does his business regardless if he lay down. When you take him out tell him "go potty' or whatever.
