OK - what methods could they have used at the time that would have been less painful?
Crucifixion was a "standard" method of execution. Remember Jesus had a few others up on the hill with him.
Would stoning have been preferable? Still seems like a nasty way to die to me.
Even beheading with an axe wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Some cases in England took a dozen swings to work because the executioner wasn't skilled and couldn't cut through the neck in one go, or kept hitting the body.

Why did Jesus go through and die the way he did? it rather is a needed question. It became into because of the fact he supported his Father’s area in the subject of known sovereignty, or rulership, that became into raised in the backyard of Eden w/ Adam, Eve, devil and the Tree of the understanding of excellent and undesirable. He proved God to be genuine and devil a liar. And he did that by letting his earthly existence be controlled by God, besides the reality that it led to a martyr’s loss of life.—2 Corinthians 5:14, 15. That loss of life became into an expression of God’s love by Christ. (a million John 4:10) consequently of it, advantages have been made obtainable to all mankind. (Romans 5:8; 6:23) yet what share are keen to settle for those advantages? what share are keen to mimic Christ and sacrifice their very own needs in submission to God’s will?—Hebrews 13:15, 17.

There were Other Ways for this to Happen.
The Father Chose Crucifixtion.
Jesus Always did What The Father Wanted.
(Like were suppose to do! ;)
Did you Know that Jesus had to "Sneak Into Hell" in Order to Help US?
The Bible Says that if the Forces of Darkness KNEW What Jesus was up to, They Would NOT have had Jesus Crucified.
Yep! It's In The Bible!

To pay the ransom, all that was required was Jesus' death. He could have died peacefully in his sleep.
But more was at stake here. Satan wanted Jesus to sin, to stop serving God so that God's plans could be thwarted.
So what better way to make someone desert their God than to force them to endure excruciating pain?

Because that is what we all deserve.
No. The payment for sin is death. He was, in a sense, a human sacrifice.

He didn't die on the cross. God wouldn't let that happen.

It was the method of punishment for the day. Jesus was judged to be a criminal.

People have had worse. Saddam's torturers could keep someone alive and in agony for days if they wanted. Being hammered to a cross was the equivalent of lethal injection in 30AD.

It would seem that God likes it when people "spill their blood" or "spill the blood of others" for Him.
Doesn't seem very ethical to me, however.
