I just got my dress tonight and I tried it on and the top is too big! It's a halter style top and I was wondering if maybe the button holes that hold the straps on could be moved down more to keep my top up. But then wouldn't it bunch up and gap? I just need someone to take in the top of the top so it will stay up. The wedding is Jan 19th, 08, do you think it will be done in time? I need help.

Oh and what is the experience like getting it altered?

Forgot to add that I have to have it done by the 10th because I have to drive 1200 to FL to the wedding. Eek!

No problem though you really need seamstress to look at it and make sure that moving the buttons will take it in enough. My sister moved the straps a little more in towards the middle of the back as well to keep them from sliding down her shoulders.

My personal experience with minor alterations like that involve a private seamstress (someone I found through other recommendations out of her own house) and David's Bridal. The private seamstress--I called and made an appointment. She measured it for the hemming and the bust alterations. That took about an hour to mark everything perfectly. Then about a week later, I picked it up and all was perfect. You may want to wait until after Christmas though, when things calm down a bit.

My experience with David's Bridal was nothing like that. I went back every 4 weeks (as they kept telling me they needed 4 weeks after marking it to hem and bustle). When I went they didn't have it done and had somehow taken out all the markings. So I had to stay a couple hours for them to mark it again, and then come back in 4 weeks. It wasn't done. We went through the whole process again. When I came back and it wasn't done that time, I was prepared to go bridezilla as it was only 4 weeks until my wedding. I yelled, had my mother yell, explain to them that I wasn't paying for alterations and would be taking my dress back in ONE WEEK so that I'd still have time to take it to a *professional* seamstress who could do a simple hem and bustle. Sounds harsh but I've heard numerous other people have to do that in order to get David's Bridal to do anything. They were able to hem and bustle it but did a crappy job.

Either way--more than likely it will be simple to alter your dress. Take it to a private seamstress. Go ahead and call her now but you'll probably take it in sometime around the first of the year. She'll have it done 1-2 weeks and you'll have time to try it on again to ensure it's perfect at least one week before the wedding.

Bridesmaid Dress Alterations

You need to take it to a tailor this weekend. I use 2 different tailor shops, and the times that I have needed some simple alterations on formal bridesmaids dresses (such as taking in a little on the side and taking up the hem) it has taken 10 days to 2 weeks. I am sure that you can get it back by the 10th but I would strongly suggest to take it this weekend and make sure to let them know when you need it!

OOps I realized you mean the 10th of January, I was thinking December, you have plenty of time I would take it 3-4 weeks before you need it just to be safe.

and to answer you other question. When you go int the tailor/seamstress will have you try the dress on, then she will pin it where it needs to be taken in or up (usually in front of a mirror so you can see how it will fit). Then once you pick it up make sure to try it on again just in case! It's pretty painless and only take 5-10 minutes!

You have plenty of time. Alterations usually only take about a week or so, especially if it is something simple. Go ahead and get it done though, in case they are busy.

The experience is simple, you will put on the dress, and then a seamstress or taylor will pin it while you are wearing it to make it fit properly. Then you carefully take it off and leave it for them. It's easy and only takes about 5 minutes.

It took my bridesmaids 3-7 days to get their dresses altered. Not too bad! Just take it to a seamstress! :-)

I was told for a wedding dress it takes 6-8 weeks. A regular dress with few changes should only take a couple of weeks depending on how busy they are.

it should take a week at the most. if you're worried about having the top bunch after, have the seamstress measure you before hand to avoid this problem.
