I'm getting a home theater system that doesn't have an HDMI input but it does have an optical which I know is also digital, but will I get the same sound out of it as I would an HDMI, I'm no audiophile as my knowledge surely reveals.

Some experts will tell you optical (or digital coaxial) can --- if a good quality cable -- actually give you better audio than HDMI.

There are potential issues with HDMI audio and optical I won't go into here, but if interested read the articles at the links.

Bottom line ... use optical or digital coax with confidence.

The replies here are mis-understanding the questioner ... Some Panasonic's have a combined digital/analog audio output socket ...... yes combined! Plug in a 3.5 mm analog jack and you get an analogue stereo output. Remove it and you can see the digital light signal beam at the bottom of the hole, so a 3.5 mm optical jack should plug into the same port and work, being retained by the 3.5 mm jack profile. Panasonic sell an expensive adapter for standard toslink cable to be used. I'm not sure if plugging it in switches the circuitry ..... I will find this out next week.

This is a yes and no answer:

YES:

An optical cable can carry a DD 5.1 signal (covers mono, stereo, and DTS).

The HDMI cable will also carry the exact same data so the sound will be identical from a normal DVD player or HDTV source like an antenna, Cable box, Sat Receiver.

HOWEVER:

The new HD-DVD and BluRay disks can carry something called "Un Compressed audio" and have room for some other formats with names like "True HD", etc. I don't think optical can carry these.

I use optical for my HD-CATV box, BluRay, HD-DVD, and xBox 360.

I strongly suggest you get a 'home theater' system that has a stand-alone receiver with lots of extra jacks in the back. It should look like a stand alone AV Receiver you see in the stores.

Yes the same digital quality should be the same for both HDMI or optical cable.
