I highly recommend Glock or Para-Ordnance. Where Smith & Wesson is popular and a very good gun, I had bad experiences with the semi-autos spitting hot brass back on me when I am shooting it. I traded my 9mm Smith for a compact .45 Para-Ordnance for this very reason and have not regretted it for one minute. When I was in law enforcement and corrections we always shot Smith & Wesson revolvers and Glock semi-autos. Glock makes a very user friendly and dependable pistol.

Ruger makes good revolvers and rifles. The Black Hawk is a great old fashioned model.I just bought a 50th anniversary edition in .44 mag for $300. Browning makes excellent pistols. I have a great Browning Buckmark .22 for plinking. Colt makes some of the best I have ever owned. I have a Colt 1911 series in .45 ACP. Smith and Wesson makes pretty good pistols. Beretta makes some sweet semi-autos. I could go on and on, but you haven't said what you want it for. There's Glock, Heckler&Koch(HK), P.O., H&R, Kimber, TC...the list goes on. You have protection, hunting, conceal/carry, target, etc. Each pistol has its pluses and minuses for certain uses.If you can tell us more we can put you on an excellent firearm for your needs.

I have a Beretta 92FS Inox, and it is a tremendously good pistol. Although, it is a little on the heavy side. If you're looking for a slightly smaller gun, you can't go wrong with the Springfield Armory XD series or just about any Glock. Also, Beretta's Px4 Storm line is pretty nice also.

I think the better question is who makes crap pistols. Almost every brand, Browning (my fav!), Ruger, Glock, S & W, Beretta, etc. all make some fine guns, it's just a matter of personal choice as to which you like better. Finding out which guns are crap is far more important.

Springfield Armory, Glock, Taurus, Ruger, Sig Sauer, Walther, Smith&Wesson (revolvers only), Beretta, Para Ordinance, Kahr.
Best bet is to go to a local gun shop and just look at as many as you can. Look for what feels best in your hand, what is easiest to sight in with your eye on a target, and if for conceal carry, what fits best on your hip.
I prefer the Springfield Armory XD series. I like Sig as well.

It's obvious by your question that you are not a shooter yet. Go to the range with a friend and see what they shoot with. You will have a better idea of what you would like and what make, model, caliber, etc. Remember, safety is everything.
