My doctor prescribed this for me. It is an anti psychotic, but he said it would be a *mood stabilzer* - anyone been on this and how did you feel? Serious answers only please.

I have been on a prescription for Risperidone (Risperdal) for over 10 years with good results and no side effects other than a decrease in libido. I take it for its anti-psychotic effect. I can't comment on the use of it as a "mood stabilizer" because I am in a good mood most of the time. Any medication for mental effect is not a silver bullet but requires in addition your willful effort to change and often the need for psychotherapy along with med's.

For more definitive information on "risperdal" type that word in quotes into Yahoo! web search. A number of links comes up. www.risperdal.com is Jantzen Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer, official web site.

Good luck with your new med, good mental health, peace and Love!

I've been on risperdal. Risperdal is used off label as a mood stabilizer. It helped me from being moody. Risperdal belongs to a group of drugs called atypical anti-psychotics. For me, on the first few days on it, I was tired, and has feelings of heart attack, but I was told that these effects would subside and they did. Main side effects with risperdal are weight gain, sedation, hyperglycemia and diabetes. There is also a long term risk of tardive dyskinesia, a potentially irreversible condition characterized by involuntary movements.

I was not a fan or Risperdal in the least. Use a journal and document how you feel everyday and any changes you notice. All I recall is it seemed to work backwards for myself and made my symptoms worse! If you don't feel like going through the trouble of the journal - just lie and say it makes you want to kill yourself and they should put you on something else. Plus you will probably get to miss some school and hang out in the psych ward and meet really extravagant people that make your parents uncomfortable when they come to visit. I know - BONUS.

not every individual will react the same way to the drug. And you also have to be aware that it needs to reach a therapeutic level in your blood stream for it to be effective. In some cases this may mean several weeks to a few months before the therapeutic dose is reached.Journal, ask your parents to help with this - ask them to be aware of personality changes & other habits.
If you feel comfortable, ask a close friend to keep an eye out too.
Best of luck to you.
