i am a biker and have been since the 70s thats a long time
the bikes today are a hell of alot faster than yesteryear
there are 3 real main reasons there seem to be more bike smashes
people from the past dont realise that todays mc's when you pull back the throttle are faster, it takes seconds to hit 60 mph one bike i had it was 0 to 60 in 3 seconds, well the old bikes used to take a lot more time to hit high speeds, thats one reason,, so they open them up like the old bikes and to their shock they are doing 100mph b4 they know it,, and lose control because they havent ridden for years,, not been on bikes for years is another reason and the 3rd is that car drivers really dont look to see if the good old bikers are comming down the road
i know we should drive with more care thats cars drivers and bikers,,but sometimes you get the young dudes who seem to have no fear and the old dudes who havent ridden for years, it is these that are the high risk crash dudes,i am not having a go at them cuz i know what it is like,, however biking is really good fun and i think that everyone should have one, it makes people better drivers of cars as they realise what the roads really are like and what it is like to come off a bike and find out what and how hard that road is
i too drive cars and vans and am fully aware of road conditions , like slippery grids wet leaves, e t c but either way it is always sad to see and hear of bike accidents, alot of my fiends have died as a result of accidents and i quess alot of people will continue to die but like i said, biking is really the best way cheap,,econimacle and FUN

It's simple when you think about it. A Motorcycle is fighting out of it's weight class. Even a small car has much more kinetic energy.
Combine that with drivers that do not actually look at the traffic, only to see if the space they want to be in is full or empty, and you have cars moving into a space that is mostly empty. There is only a motorcycle there not a school bus or something that really fills the space.
How do you fix that? DUH. Train the auto drivers as well as the cycle riders. If drivers in the USA actually had to be proficient at driving to get their license, rather than only have to prove that they know what the speed limit is in a school zone, they might actually put down the cell phone and take driving seriously. If motorcycle riders rode everyday they would develop a keener awareness of the hulking auto drivers and their intentions. I developed a riding technique that enables me to know that a driver was going to change lanes before he knew he was going to, almost.

time to get the novel out. there's alot of reasons, cars not seeing us is 1.
here's the list:
newbies that have zero saddle time snappin up a hayabussa, r-1, r-6, or other high powered rice rocket that can go from 0-110 in roughly 2.5 or 3 seconds. these dont usually survive their first season...a car, tree, or guard rail usually takes care of them
middle ager's that try to jump on a big dresser, and have little to no saddle time, or hasnt been on a bike for decades. today's bikes are alot more potent than they were 30 yrs ago.
cars that are driven with cell phones going.
noob's tryin to take a 20 mph hairpin at 80 on a bike that isnt designed for it. an instant recipe for disaster.
noobs that put armor-all on the tires. that will drop a bike as soon as that slop meets the road.
noobs that have none to very little experience in the art of pack riding. this situation is tricky at best, at worst, it can create a multi-bike pileup in seconds.
noobs that fall into the redneck mentality of 'hey ya'all....watch this.....' and then splatter themselfs into a tree.
disrespect of the road will do it. a road they've never been on before, and tryin to ride at triple digits without doing some recon on it. 1 patch of gravel is all it takes to go asphalt surfing.
these are the common reasons. problem is, in the states, any noob that has zero saddle time can get a 'bussa and become a hood ornament within 3 weeks or less. in the uk tho, u gotta earn the right to ride a high powered bike. we call noob's 'squids'.....stupid, quick, underdressed, inevitably dead'. typical squids wear flip flops, shorts, tank top, no gloves, and maybe a baseball cap. they wind up dead before the season is out.

There are several reasons for this:-
First most car drivers are used to see cars on the road and as such often do not see motorcycles.
Secondly the UK does not have the best weather and as a result often motorcycles are dropped due to surface water etc.
Thirdly there is a large number of so called born again biker, these are middle ages men who how taken up motorcycle driving after many year off bikes. They tend to go out and buy power-full machines and often they do not have the required skills to handle them.
Ja.

The BMW C1 had a seat belt & roll cage. It sold about 20,000 but went out of production. This principle could be applied to more m/cs with a major redesign.
The Honda Goldwing has an airbag. Lets hope this technology trickles down to more m/cs.
The Piaggio MP3 has 2 front wheels. More rubber on the road makes it harder to fall off and improves braking by 20%.
Airbag jackets are in the shops.
NCAP style crash helmet testing starts in UK next year.
M/cs need to be more conspicuous, brighter colours for clothing would help.
Drink driving needs to be stamped out.
There is hope for better m/c safety using these technologies.

i live quite near 1 of the worst roads in north yorkshire for motorbike accidents, if you saw the way some of the bikers ride their bikes then youd understand why. what do you do if youre driving round a corner and a bike comes at you on your side of the road? they know theyre taking a risk every time they get on their bikes.

Rider Causes: Behavior and attitude, No training, Insufficient training, Riding under influence, Riding beyond abilities , Speeding, Bike choice beyond experience and/or physical abilities, More riders on the road(more bikes, more chance of crashes)
Other Driver Causes: Behavior and attitude, Inattention (distracted), Don't see motorcycles (small size), Don't expect to see motorcycles(not as prevalent in traffic as other types of vehicles; we see what we expect to see), Misjudge motorcycle movements, Greatest number of highest risk drivers on the road than any time in history(teens and seniors)
Environmental Causes: More road furniture(bus shelters, buildings, signs, landscape elements) that possibly hide motorcycle from other road users
Vehicle Design Causes- more SUV and Trucks on the road than any other time in history( more blind spots), faster and more powerful motorcycles
These are a few of the causes.

I believe motorcyclists drive much too fast and do not appreciate their lack of control of a very dangerous vehicle.
