We always set a Christmas budget. Usually its $100/child. We have three.
When my oldest was younger, i would spoil her rotten on Christmas - which she started to expect. One year, I didn't have very much money to spend on gifts so I picked a few items that I knew she really wanted. On Christmas morning I was devastated by her reaction. After that, we started the budget thing and we also make it a point to help those less fortunate than ourselves. My daughter has even used money her Grandparents have given her for herself to get other children gifts.
I agree with the five gifts most people are saying. We try to spend that $100 on one big gift they really really want then buy 3-4 smaller items.

Depending on her age...and the fact that she already has a bunch of stuff that she doesn't appreciate. I would set the bar low. There's nothing wrong with buying your child stuff for Christmas....but it's better to not instill greed in them. My friend spends $1000 on each of her children (she literally saves all year) her kids are under 7. I think that she's nuts...especially since as they get older their "toys" get bigger and more expensive.
At any rate....as a former single mother with a moderate income....I suggest buying ONE big gift...and a few smaller ones. I wouldn't go hog wild...maybe tell her specifically to cut her list down. There's nothing wrong with teaching moderation. When we sit down to write Santa...they get to ask for 3 things (and only 3 things) and Santa only brings one gift. My husband and I will buy the other two items they ask for and maybe one more thing.
Good luck. And I know that I will get thumbs down for this...but oh well. I never understood why people needed to out do the Jones' simply because they had children.

I'm married and have 3 kids and the min. about per kid is 5 gifts go to walmart, target, big lots. Toys are toys they either break it or lose it. Before I got married my son wanted all the best toys but I was single with a 9 to 5 job. So what did was get him the #1 item that he wanted then 4 the rest get what is almost the same and cheaper.

My kids are 9 years old and 21 months old. my daughter(9 yrs old) i spend roughly around $450 for her christmas presents. The big gift she wants this xmas is a electric scooter. She is a good girl and appreciates everything she gets so i try to get everything she lists on her christmas list which is this year 12 items. As for my son, i will only spend $150 as he could care less. Then we go over my sister and her family's house and we will exchange gifts over there, as well. Just spend within your means and much happiness to you on the holidays

i generally buy a big present-like the one that cost the most or is the biggest-then about 5 smaller things -and fill the stocking-I dont choose big expensive toys for the 5 presents either-just fun stuff. You can always say that Santa brought her what he thought she needed-I usually put some wrapped candy in the stocking too so they dont take the toys for granted. Good Luck!

i try and stick to abt 5 gifts, and no more than like 150.00 per child. christmas is a special day, but i cannot afford to over spend then be late on bills, (which i started out doing )
plus, in my family, i know that they will get gifts from a few other family members, and that they will have plenty.

Mine is a ten year old boy, and I ask him to pick out one big item and three or four smaller things that he really wants. That way I can get him what he wants the most, plus a few surprises, and he is happy without being overly spoiled.

We never went by the dollar amount (while of course taking into account what we could afford), but rather focused on getting things which we knew our child would love. Quality over quantity.
