A sub has 2 inputs, one is called line input, or speaker input, and this will require a normal amplifier speaker output. It usually has 2 connectors, for L and R. This use is not really using the sub, you are just adding a woofer. The speaker input on the sub bypasses the internal amplifier.

The second input is the correct one, it has only a single input, and is often labeled LFE. This should run to the "sub pre out" on the receiver. This will be correctly using the sub in a 5.1 surround system.

Might help?

Sounds like you know your connections though, so perhaps this was not it. The only other thing I can think of is going into the speaker setup on the pioneer and checking that the sub is turned on. There is a menu dedicated to setting all the speakers up.

You won't get a signal from the pre-amplifier output connection either.
If the Sony does not have an output for a sub, then you have to use the speaker connections. You can use the speaker connections to the sub and from the sub you should be able to connect your two main speakers.

You have to tell your receiver 2 things:

- That you have a subwoofer hooked up
- That the L/R Center and Rear speakers are 'SMALL'

This will force the receiver to send the ".1" sound and all low-frequency sounds to the sub.

Also - the receiver has a volume adjustment for the LFE or SUBWOOFER output. This is used to get the subwoofer to produce similar volume to the speakers. Make sure it is turned up and not at "-9" or some such.
