5 is too old. I saw this trick on one of the Nannie shows. You have her leave it at night for the pacy fairy to take it too another little girl or boy and in it's place you leave a toy(doll or something she would want. Of course you have to ask her mothers permission.

She's too old for that thing to be stuck in her face. If she doesn't get her daughter off of it, it can cause her to have dental problems, i.e teeth coming in crooked, bucked teeth, etc. My oldest child is the only one out of my three boys that took a paci but he pretty much stopped it on his own at a year of age. My neighbor's daughter is 3, in preschool and still uses one, I personally think 3 is even too old.. Your sister is going to have to take all of them away. Yes, she will scream and throw a fit but this is where your sister puts her foot down and refuses to give it back. She needs to explain that she is no longer a baby and no longer needs it. It might be a rough couple of nights at first but she'll soon realize that she isn't getting it back and eventually she'll get over it.

Yes, she is too old for a pacifier. They need to take it away slowly. We did this at the age of two and only let our son have it at nap time and bed time. Then when it was getting close to his 3rd birthday we told him 3 year olds don't have pacifier and he would have to throw them away. So we did. He wanted to throw them in the river. So we made a big deal about it and it tossed them in the river. He cried himself to sleep for three nights and then it was over! GOOD LUCK!

The problem is not with the child, but with the mother.
You need to make mom understand that keeping her child a baby is harmful. Besides the obvious negative affect to her teeth, and the hit she will take on her self esteem from all the other kids, if mom sees her as a baby, how can she help her develop into the person she has the potential to be? Help mom realize she is not losing a baby, but gaining a little girl.

my son was on the pacifier and i couldnt take it anymore. he lost it alll the time. he was 2 when we took it away completely. but honestly i think that was too old for a pacifier. its easier without the darn thing. i took my daughters away at 6 months. she didnt even notice. and you really only "need" one when they are really young when they do suck for comfort. i think after that its just habit.

I heard that pacifiers can be bad if they kid uses them after they start getting their teeth as the sucking can cause the teeth to grow in crooked. That is really old, to still be using them...

Wow, way to old for a pacifier....
will move teeth around(per dentist advice), socially will get teased in school (is she is school yet?)and ya, the mom needs to take it away sometime when they are out, and tell the kid it's lost. (worked for my neighbors kid(he was 4)

talk to her mom about it.. my baby brother sorta did the same, but we took his pacifier away. and when he started screaming we would say "no. this is for little babies. your a big boy now" and he would kick and scream and we would give him a little swat of the hand and say " be a good boy. and give him something else to chew on

She is too old for it. She will give it up when she realised kids are teasing her about it.
When my son was four I dressed up as Santa Claus at Christmas and told my son he had to give it up so other kids could use it and that he would get a special present. He totally fell for it!!!
