Puppy Question: We determined our puppy has tapeworm because he sheds rice like stuff in his bed, we just bought him and we're shown his was de-wormed a few weeks ago, would he still be shedding this stuff if the treatment worked? Thank you.

I do not understand what the rice like stuff is you are talking about. Most puppies have worms when they are born but not tapeworms. If you think he still has worms then when you take him for his shots ask them to give him another dose of de-wormer. They usually do but ask just in case.

Pups are only dewormed for roundworms and hookworms starting at the age of 2 weeks. Tapeworms do come from ingesting fleas. Tapeworms take a different medication as mentioned from someone above and is only given if you are certain that they have tapeworms. Its not a weekly dose of medication given to prevent the pup from getting the worms. Nothing that the previous owners of the puppy did, unless the pup was infested with fleas. All it takes is one flea to be ingested. They do look like rice and will attach to the bottom of the pup.

Best bet is a thorough Vet exam because you want to get the pup off on the right "paw" to prevent illnesses and correct any existing problems, like the possible tapeworm condition. I really doubt the people you got the pup from had it treated for tapeworms at four weeks old. Tapeworms are something dogs get from ingesting fleas.
Your Vet can also get you started on a schedule (at the right ages and in the correct amounts) for heatworm prevention medication and flea prevention products that are appropriate for the pup.

Was he treated for worms or was he treated for tape? They are 2 different meds.
The other reason would be if you have fleas. Fleas are the carrier of tape.
You can buy a tapeworm med otc. Praziquantel is the generic version of what the vet uses.

usually when they deworm a puppy they have to treat the tape worm seperately. ivormectin is what they give them for this and you can buy it cheap at any feed mill or tracter supply store. the only thing is that it is for cows so you have to figure out the weight for your puppy. it can be tricky so be sure you know what you are doing. you could call your vet and ask them if you can just have a tape worm treatment for your puppy...if you know your vet pretty well sometimes they will just give it to you for the cost of the pill and not for an office visit. any medicine that you buy at petsmart or anywhere will not work so dont waste your money

Tapeworm is not treated with regular wormer it is treated seperately. tape wormis from ingesting fleas. Teh general rule is for every flea on the dog there is 100 in your house.
I would suggest treating the pup and hte house for fleas as wella s tapeworm meds. ( please get your meds at the vets they are much better than anyhting over the counter.) most vets use Droncit.

No.

I would question the quality of care he has recieved if the breeder allowed him to leave his mom and go to you at 6 weeks AND that he had tapeworms.

Take a fecal sample to your vet and they can check to see if he still has parasites and if he does they will give you a more effective wormer
